We almost had a cyberpunk league!

“So we had this idea of having the same character turn up with her time portals, but this time you go into the far future where it’s some cyberpunk corporation in a futuristic city,” Wilson says. “You’re portaling into this high-tech corporation where there are guards with laser guns, and you have to change what’s going on over there.

“It’s the same mechanic, but in a cyberpunk, futuristic setting. It would have been a cute thing because you get to see what the far future of this fantasy world would look like once they get good technology. The idea is that it’s some Val Corporation with a CEO and stuff.”

The idea never came to pass for a few reasons. Wilson tells us the Incursion league was only of “medium popularity”, and creating a cyberpunk league close to the Cyberpunk 2077 release date didn’t seem wise. Also, one particular PoE team was particularly opposed to it.

“Our art team said ‘we’re not making a sci-fi league, that’s crazy’,” Wilson recalls. “So that’s probably never going to happen. Incursion 2077 was the joke name that we internally had for that. But it probably can’t happen. It looks silly to do cyberpunk tie-in so close to that game’s release.

Thanks goodness the Art Team still has common sense...

Leave that cyberpunk "sci-fi " trash to games dedicated to it.
I find it pretty refreshing that the head of the company doesn't always have the final say in matters and the development team are free to voice their creative disagreements.

Also, as fun and wacky as the idea sounds it is probably best that there isn't a league that basically kills any sense of urgency for whatever world ending threats they would have had planned by basically showing that the world was able to survive for so long.
Man that art looks cool. I freakin love that setting, but for something like an ARPG it just will never work for me, and basically that's because of guns.

I can suspend my disbelief currently with melee weapons and spells and how much damage they do compared to themselves. But throw in guns, and yea now it doesn't make sense.

The art isn't by GGG, but a community member (linked below). I just recalled it when I read this and so attached it below. :)

Also, there's already an ARPG that mixes guns and bows and melee and spells - Grim Dawn.

Torchlight did it as well.
The art for the 7 exiles looks interesting.

L-R:

Templar (psionics, quantum weapons, traditional martial arts and political prowess)
Shadow (sabotage, general nethack dooshbaggery, skript kiddies, industrial espionage, minor psionics)
Marauder (cyborg personnel and personnel carriers, fully encapsulated assault unit, extreme situation spec ops)
Scion (jackass of all trades master of none, as usual)
Ranger (beleaguered sysadmin or lead programmer; exquisite mastery of conventional systems engineering and logic, all available biochemistry degrees, makes the best and most potent cup of coffee on the planet, some say it is bottomless, others say it's Dexedrine.)
Duelist (Valiant, expendable generic Star Trek redshirt; or, a mix of traditional combat training, proficiency with space-age gadgets, and reckless enthusiasm)
Witch (Robotics, neural net boogaloo, Ghost In The Shell-types of handwaving, as well as a hefty helping of psionics especially w/r/t giant death robots and self-aware AIs)

Oh I know, and I played grim dawn for a bit as well. And just like warcraft I had to grin and bear it lol. Yall made guns, but decided to not try to make them... fire faster? Sure makes sense.
Would be weird for lore.

Lore for PoE is "whatever I think real is real if I have enough magic power".
That's not really a problem.

The game style, however, will probably limit what we could get to steampunk.
