As a new player:
A convoluted, questionably designed passive skill system that provides an illusion of choice quickly dispersed by math, experience, and reason. An annoying lack of adequate gear while leveling due to the socket system. An inability to get the skills you need for your character without trading or making an alt because you are limited to choosing certain types based on your class. Wondering what the point is as you fight the same three monsters reskinned from your first second in act 1 normal to your last second in merciless chaos. A bunch of skills that could be cool if they were tested and tweaked but actually suck. An entire third of the stat/class system approaching useless and whose highlight abilities are "be more like a str character" and "get as far away from this third of the passive skill tree as fast as possible". An ability to watch monsters swing at you and continue swinging for a second or two despite you being half a screen away. You waddled away at a duck's pace during the swing. Truthful joking and loving jabs aside, PoE offers: -Actual tension at times in combat. Your health bar moves and it moves fast. -Potion management that adds to the skill required to play without being annoying or detracting from the game. -Item diversity and ball-busting odds on magic finding good items. This is a downside to some and a positive to others, but it offers it and D3 doesn't so it's here. -Developers who are making the game they want to play with a minimal conflict of interest. -The potential for its flaws to go away rather quickly through tweaks and patches. (D3's flaws are there to stay, if you think it has flaws.) -Hours of fun that starts from the first time you log on and keeps going until you get bored. Then it's fun again the next day or in a week. -Incentive to make new characters and experiment -Extensive, well maintained ladder system and cool game modes. -Short term ladders will provide enjoyment for even the most experienced player. -Hours of time wasted on theorycrafting your own dumb builds (this will probably be minimized significantly in the future as standards are set, but it's always fun to try something different anyway.) -Tons of ability to improve your character through gear. All of your skills are gear. You can't really go wrong with PoE. It's a good game that can only get better, and it isn't in direct competition with any other game coming out any time soon. I plan on playing for a long, long time. D2 is played out and poorly maintained, D3 targets a different audience and might as well be a different genre of game (that I will be playing), and the other ARPG-hopefuls don't have persistent multiplayer. It's the only game in the genre I've played that doesn't make me think "I could just be playing Diablo 2." Last edited by Watlok#2219 on Apr 23, 2012, 2:09:40 AM

...hm. Maybe. Start saving. :P ___ I feel like I should pull this back on-topic, but the first response sufficed. There are so many threads discussing this already... If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.
