There may be something fundamental I don't know about this, I'm guessing you don't mean Orbs of Alteration? Since selling the rares to vendors gets orbs (shards) of Transmutation rather than Alteration.
I think he was referring to selling identified rares.
Selling identified rares can give you alteration and/or alchemy shards or orb of augmentation.

Ah ok thanks, I've not really bothered identifying many so far, maybe I should start doing that, it seems the benefits may be more than the value of a Scroll of Wisdom.
Am I missing some way of making currency? I rarely find anything any players would buy.
You should get a lot of chaos drops running maps. You should get quite a lot more chaos than Regal drops. You should not need to do recipes or sell stuff to get a lot of chaos.
As for recipes, I'm self found and prefer regal recipes. That's because I actually use them more as orbs, not currency. Since I rarely buy anything, I couldn't care less about market value. For me, regals are worth more than chaos.
Yep, I thought about that since I played SSF the last couple of leagues. I had no idea what i was doing though - I get the impression that you need to know the game - and especially the crafting system - inside out to play SSF.
This league I'm starting to realise that most good gear can be covered with well-crafted rares if you know what you're doing.
