Beginner Build - Need advice for father son duo

Good Morning!

With the fun self quarantine going on, I am looking to play a little PoE with my dad so he doesn't go crazy. I need some suggestions for easy builds that focus on getting through the game. Not necessarily end-game, as we will probably not make it.

We've actually played together before. We both ran Ancestral Warchief, a very easy build to run through the game. Made it to 90+. This was years ago though.

Would anyone be able to suggest a build that would be good for someone who isn't the best? We don't want to run the same thing as we did before.

Some of the solid builds this league below, in no particular order. There should be decent guides on all of these.

Essence Drain Trickster
Storm Brand Hierophant
Ball Lightning Sabo Miner
Vortex Occultist
Herald of Purity Guardian
Impale Cyclone Champion
Lacerate Gladiator

My son is home for a bit. He got me into PoE a year ago but hasn't played much lately. We will probably level a couple of toons together as well.

Have fun! And don't be surprised if you die more than you remember. They beefed up mobs and bosses last league to balance all the power creep. It's easy to die...

If you're not worried about end game and want a "budget" type of build that isn't too bad, check out Enki's Arc Witch. Just follow the guide and he should have no issues. This is assuming of course that your dad is a novice at gaming?
If he's a gamer and will pick up on things quickly then maybe a more advanced build.
Wild Strike Assassin is a LOT of fun, it's a ton of dps and mobility, just a little fragile.

Thanks a lot for the tips! I'll look into this. If it's easier to die, my dad will probably need a tankier build. As he will not be the best at dodging attacks, he'll have to eat some. He was a marauder totem build last time, so that made it so he could walk through the game basically lol.

Out of those builds, what one do you think is the tankiest? Thanks again btw!

Novice is probably an overstatement lol. Last time we played we made it to end-game maps, and did some of those. That was running Marauder Warchief though, so it was about as simple as can be. Maybe looking for a little steup from that.

The arc would be interesting as it's easy, but I worry it may not be tanky enough? It would have to be life build I think, as ES is probably too much for him.

Thank you for your input!!

I also typically recommend Enki Arc witch for new players. However it sounds as if the two of you will be going through the acts together, probably at a slower pace, and with you there to advise and inform on the basics as they arise. With that in mind anything Cyclone will probably net the best results for him. Spin to win is very straight forward after all. Biggest change to most guides I’d make is have him use Purity of Elements since low elemental resistance is one of the primary reasons for deaths while leveling. If you have the budget and desire for it, you could also easily pick up some solid leveling uniques for both of you.

Have fun!

Those are some 3.10 videos with links to written guides and PoBs.
If you're not familiar with Path of Building, it's a great tool that you should download.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations. I am a little undecided on what to do. Arc would be good, but I worry it's a little squishy for him. The ease of arc is appealing though. Right click. That's it lol. I think we will give it a try, and worst case scenario we re-roll. Not the end of the world!

Thanks for the reply :)

I'll look into this right now. Thanks a lot for your recommendations! :)
If you want to get as far as possible without high investment, my eternal league starter is impale champion double strike. Vaal double strike will carry you to endgame, easy to play, quite tanky.
Wrecker of Days has some builds that are designed to be easy to play (mostly one button) and pretty tanky. You might check these out for your dad.
