Energy shield recovery
Does it only recover out of battle? How long (without passives) does it take to recharge (including delay)

Yes, you must avoid being hit by some seconds, and then it starts to regenerate.
Don't know exact times, so I hope somebody else could answer and help you, mate. There are some passives in the tree to improve this process too, if you are interested enough on it. IGN: Gonorreitor

So generally evasion is better than armour when paired with energy shield, cos if you dodge attacks you can regen your shield?

" Not necessarily, evasion does get you hit less frequently, but armor will make each hit smaller so there's less energy shield used. At end-game, with deminishing returns, I find a mix of all 3 most benificial for my build. I think your regeneration delay is shown in the Defense tab of you character screen (C).

" I'm not at home, so I can't check or be certain. But i think it just gives a % for the delay, not a number, like 2sec... So my delay shows -45%, but I still don't know the actual # in seconds. |

Yeah it's 6 seconds and you can drop it down to about 3 seconds with passive bonuses.
That being said 99.9% of the time your better off getting hp regen passives and max hp passives then any passive having to do with energy shields. Even with a 3 second delay...and decent evasion your not going to regen much in combat with energy shields. Hp regen on the other hand is constant...and regens more as well. In addition hp % bonuses stack well with pure HP increase and the base hp you get per level to make you get more "life" compared to shield % increases (even for a witch/pure spellcaster). Shields are fairly ineffective to specialize in even for extreme int based builds. It takes way to many passive nodes to make them fairly effective and even then you still have severe weaknesses. The main reason to go with shields at all that I see is if you already have another build that goes right by Shield boosting nodes...and your ending up with a very high int anyway naturally. That being said EVERY starting class can get 1% max health regen per second very fast/easy (since both are right near the center of the map and it takes 7 or so moves to get there for everyone). 1% of max health regen even for a pure witch is probably going to do more then shields do in most cases (especialy since it works in combat as well. All characters have at least a base 400 hp by lvl 60...and quite often you have much more. Add in the fact that you can either get trolls blood or golems blood (troll for spellcasters, golems for dex based duelists/rangers) easily while still getting your offenses up...and you can have 3-4% of health regenning per second. With the % max health bonuses you get along the way..you can easily be regenning 40+ hp naturally per second even as an int based character. Instead of wasting time with shields, try and grab evasion and armor instead, it'll work much better with the natural health regeration you get. |

" You've obviously never seen an ES built witch/templar for Fire, Lightning, OR Cold. My COLD/ES Templar has 9832 ES that regens in 3seconds. All I have to do is that if I get near 30% ES I surround myself in multiple layers of ice-wall really quick (it KnocksBack on hit...so it pushes them back per layer). IceWall, without lag or desync, will block ALL incoming ranged & melee damage. Then once my icewalls fall I go back to AOE blasting ERY-THANG to death. Literally, people "In the know" have all said that ES tanks are better than armor OR evasion OR HP tanks. HOWEVER, the ONLY thing you said that was correct is that you gimp your dps severely by going ES as a defense. However, it is a REQUIREMENT that you can either one-shot everything OR can take a decent beating in Merciless-Chaos. Otherwise, there's no point in being a glass cannon...EVER. |
