Need to understand Templar Purifying Flame and Herald of Purity Game mechanics.

I am currently playing test builds for Templar using Purifying flame and Herald of Purity. Eventually will get to test build Divine Ire later on.

I am having problems under standing how support gems and also Passives for these skill gems.

I found Herald of purity to be an important skill for my Templar as It adds reasonable damage and Sentinels keep mobiles bissy so I end up taking a lot less damage. I noticed there are a lot of skill gems and passives to support other types of Minions but they do not list Sentinels especially for adding more Minions. What support gems and passives actually boost Sentinels? Are Minion passives worth getting as Sentinels are an important part of my build?

Also I need to learn the game mechanics for Purifying Flame as for using support gems and also damage types on the passive tree. Seeing that Purifying flame does physical damage and converts 50% physical damage to fire damage what + damage passives should I be looking for. There are various physical and elemental damage as well as fire and lightning damage passives but am wondering which ones would be the best for my build.
What damage passives should I be looking at to maximize my damage from Purifying Flame.
I'll assume you mean Herald of Purity, which creates Sentinels; Herald of Ash does not. Sentinels deal Melee Physical Attack Minion damage, so support gems that boosts these damage types/sources/tags will work; however, they'll also balloon the mana reservation quite a lot. Passives only boost their damage if they grant Minion damage; other passives don't apply to your Minions. Since you're using them to increase survivability, Meat Shields Support is a good bet. It lets them taunt on hit, drawing aggro away from you and making you take less damage when you do get hit, and makes the Sentinels themselves tankier. If you can get the Sentinels to deal Fire damage (look for a jewel that adds Fire damage to Minions), Elemental Army Support will let them apply Exposure to boost your Purifying Flame damage.

If you take Minion damage passives, you'll probably also want to take the Spiritual Aid passive, which makes them apply to you as well. If you do, you could try to use Bound Fossils to craft a weapon with around 75% Increased Minion damage, which then also grants Increased Global Damage to you.

Purifying Flame scales with Physical, Fire, Spell, and Area damage, so any passives affecting them will apply to it.
This is not a hard rule, but its usually more effective to go full minion damage or go full personal damage with minor minion support. You can hybridize but you'll be less effective than either.

Supporting Herald of purity also ramps up the mana reservation. For a while I played with a 6L herald of purity that took up 82% of my mana.

But, it was weak, you have to hit to summon them, but if you are full minion thats annoying.

As ek said, all minion tags and most melee tags support the heralds. Melee splash lets them clear packs.
Found out something about the mechanics of Herald of purity. It works with Summon Phantasm Support. It does not work all the time but I am getting a mix of Sentinels and more minions fro Phantasm Support.

Also found out that minion speed is important and generally works out better than using minions with normal Minion speed.
You might check poe ninja... Plenty of Guardians using HoP in a 5+. The mechanics to "summon" them are an issue, though. Not like skellies where you just hit a button and they appear where you want them. Every one of those guys will have something like Cyclone or HoA in at least a 4L. Sometimes the other skill is in the 6L and the HoP is a 5L Helm or Gloves.

If you want to look more closely at Purifying Flame, that's mostly Sabo Miners with some Chieftains self casting it.

Nothing says that you have to use a build that's popular with the 100-pusher crowd, but the stuff you find in wide use there usually works.
