Is there a social aspect to this game?

Hello all,

Before I began the long road with this game, I just want to know if there is a social aspect to this game? Do people play together? Are there guilds? Is there an endgame hang out spot where people group up and then head out to do dungeons/maps? Be as detailed as you like. Thank you all.

yeah people play in party sometime, you can build your own guild. there's some pvp and trading.
If you enjoy chatting and playing party find a guild asap.

Not my cause because this is my social aspect in poe:

"Hi, I would like to buy X pixxel for X currency in twitch drop league"

/trade

"ty"

"t4t"

there's my social aspect, I don't find party play in poe very engaging or something to aim for specially with the vomit on my screen due to different leagues by now, I see guilds as useful as they were in d3..

but don't take my word for granted, I'm mostly a "lone wolf" in arpgs.
"Parade your victories, hide your defeats. Mortals are so insecure."

Once you break the cycle of fear no angels or demons can whisper you their sweet nothing words.

poe0.2/10. Nuff said.

I enjoy the social aspect of the games i play. But Xystre’s experience with social interactions in the game is pretty much the same as mine. POE is basically a solo online ARPG.
It will convert your forum titles into decorative square badges that use the space next to your forum posts more economically so that you can show off an unlimited number of them at any one time. - GGG, 2018 (https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3573673)

Okay fine, you got me I don't chat either.. but I have global and trade chats on for obvious reasons: laughs.

Yes, people play together ... sometimes. How much depends on you. There are always parties available to join (or you can start your own), but the game doesn't insist on it and so many choose to mostly play solo. But if you always want to map in parties, you can do so. It's not usually pleasant though, cos the game is fast for experienced players and so you'll constantly be running desperately just to keep up with them. The game is balanced around single player, and so there's no need to coordinate or cooperate to clear maps/bosses.

Yes, there are guilds. You can find them easily either on these forums (scroll down the index to the guilds section) or just by asking in global chat in-game (or on the PoE Discord). Again, they're optional. You get a shared stash and some people to chat and/or get advice from, but otherwise the game doesn't push them. There're no dedicated guild events or other incentives, so it's up to you.

The 'endgame hangout spot' would be Oriath, but that's only because that's the last story town and so that's where everyone spawns when they log in. There's pretty much no social interaction there.

None of this is abnormal, btw. PoE is an ARPG, not an MMORPG. The facilities are there for you to play with others if you want, but there's nothing in the game that particularly pushes you to do that (except for getting greater amount of drops when playing in a party, but those are allocated across the members). It's much the same in other ARPG's. So basically it's as social as you try to make it.

It is not recommended to play in party because of performance issues and less currency/hour
actually 3 times less per player.

But yes it is possible to do, there is just never great reason to do anything except

"Dear friend from x league i would like to buy x for x in stash tab x that is located 15right 5down"

I feel pretty, Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty, and witty and gay,
And I pity Any girl who isn’t me today!
No.
There is no social interaction in this game. It's just the occasional trade, that's it.
Patch Notes 3.15:
Fixed a bug where players believed the game was playable. This has been corrected and made retroactive.
Patch Notes 3.19:
Fixed a bug where players adapted to 3.15. This bug cannot be corrected, so we have implemented a 90% reduction in item access as a punishment.
