Today, I've had one of the worst experiences I've ever had in a game. I've been playing PoE on and off for over a year now..just barely got into it as delve league began and then took a long break until Legion.
Anyway, I asked a question in global about a fossil I had never seen before and asked what it did. Long story short, every response I got was disrespectful and eventually led to mocking me because I was ignorant about the Glyphic fossil, despite having completed the 40 challenges during this league. Without specific details, it may sound like I'm being overly sensitive, but it wasn't a playful jest, it was full-on contempt and condescension. Someone told me to kill myself. And while he repeatedly said this, not a single person actively present in global chat protested his depravity. Do you not find this problematic?? I got really upset because, firstly, that is absolutely disrespectful and offensive. But more importantly, secondly, it inspired despair within me. The reason is this: I have continuously been witness to the toxicity being spread in global chat (and I'm ashamed to admit that I have also been part of the problem at times, but with remorse), and the issue seems so beyond wide spread and accepted--no--encouraged! as normative that if you were to rebuke those who behaved so negatively and immorally, then you would become a giant target of their nasty attacks. What's more, the majority of the bystanders laugh at all of the malicious comments launched at their victims. I do not want to say anymore about what goes on; I'm sure everyone knows exactly what I'm referring to. I am sick of the apathy of this community, and forgive me for accusing anyone of this, but it is my impression that, as a whole, our community is largely indifferent towards making any substantial efforts to eliminate toxic behaviors exhibited between players, especially through global chat. I am not sure what my post will accomplish, if it accomplishes anything at all. But my hope is that it will raise awareness of a serious problem that I believe to be corroding our community, and even our humanity. If anyone reading this believes it is acceptable in any way to treat another person contemptuously and maliciously for no good reason (because there is in fact no good reason), you are part of the problem. No one sane and who possesses dignity would ever welcome mistreatment. Thus, there can be nothing good or right in mistreating others in this game. The bullying and emotional terrorism that has invaded PoE is corrosive to all human decency that remains in this community. Reading global chat for merely 10 minutes, on most days, will be sufficient evidence to convince you that the behaviors I have described are becoming more and more normative, and they are occurring with seemingly zero resistance from those who witness them. Sure, the victim of an attack might report his/her attacker. But more often than not, other people will join in the bullying. And since there is generally more toxic people, and because those who disagree with them tend not to use global chat very much, there remains very few people (or no one) to protest the abuse, far fewer who are even willing to say anything. If a GM reads this, please, refer your superior to what I've posted. I understand that it may not be feasible to assign a GM to the most popular global chats to monitor what is said every hour, which is why the report feature was implemented. Yet, perhaps there is something else that can be done to supplement the existing judicial system of this game> And to fellow players, please I encourage you to be part of a movement to restore decency, respect, compassion, and peace throughout our community, and especially if you participate in global chat. We need to publicly declare immoral behavior to be just that: wrong, indecent, inappropriate, etc. If we speak out against what someone has done because we deem it wrong, we should speak out with tact and civility. I'm not proposing that we stop notifying GMs, I'm just saying that we should try to care more about what our community stands on and stands for. I'm sorry for the disorganization of my message. Oh... and we're all part of the problem. You too. The problem is that there's too many fucking (literally) people on this planet. We've gone from a population of a few thousand to 7.5 billion. We've eliminated all our major predators, and still breed like we are faced with extinction. There's too many fish in the aquarium and it's going to crash. That site will pretty much answer any question you may have about Crafting to Fossils and a bit of everything in between. Favorite it you'll definitely find tons of use from there. Very easy solution to your problems as well as your Blood Pressure. Im about as thick skinned as they come and i dont even leave Chat on. Guess its the Adult in me or something.. " +1 to turning off global chat. It has been a cesspool of humanity in all games for a long time now. +1 also to Shags on the troubling truth about human overpopulation. No one really wants to engage me on that discussion but it's spot on. |

Btw, Can you tell me how much is worth <insert trash rare item>? Since you are that nice can you also pc for me <insert hundred of trash items>? THANKSSSSSSSSSSSS! Personally im not a big fan of global chat but for the love of Toucan. Why 99% of questions asked on global are a result of people being lazy and not because something is hard to figure out. "Toxic" - check! "Emotional terrorism" - check! "decency" - check! "inappropriate" - check! Yup, this thread is gonna go just swimmingly... Fyi, I've been on global aplenty. I've also been attacked on it aplenty, yes including what they told you to do and worse (you actually took it seriously? Lol!). Haven't ever let it get to me as much as it apparently has you. You talk about wanting to restore "decency, respect, compassion, and peace throughout our community". Wanna know why people don't like that kinda campaign? It sounds like such an obvious thing to be in favor of, right? Well, it's cos of how you get that 'peace' - through a boot pressing your face down into the ground. Well, that's for the stronger kind of 'peace'. For the rather less violent kind we have what you're advocating, but it's still the same principle. In the words of the holy Kane of the Brotherhood of Nod - Peace Through Power! And that's not a thing many people relish embracing. And they're working (even India's population growth rate is only slightly above replacement level now, and still falling). About the worst thing you can do now for population control is adopt policies that hurt that development, which a lot of the more inhumane solutions (aka forced sterilization and/or genocide) do. Population is dismissed by serious policymakers cos they know a focus on it achieves nothing but cater to the worst social impulses. Go read up on the literature. You want efforts made to control population (that don't involve widespread human culling)? They're already being done, and have been for decades, just without being explicitly labelled population control. Cos the last thing they want is to feed that dark narrative. And btw, if you want to do some old-fashioned culling anyway, it's far more effective to begin with people in America, Australia or Austria rather than Argentina, Afghanistan or Angola. op i'd highly recommend finding a friendly active guild, theres some good ones out there and you won't be mocked by people who'd rather try and get a reaction rather than be nice or helpful when people ask questions.
