Can't play, says not enough space on my disk
I can't play, it checks the resources for quite a long time and then says there is not enough space on the disk.
In the thread below, several people say standalone installation takes about 8 GB and Steam installation takes 12 and a bit, and upon checking I see it's more than 12 GB yet I don't have Steam! Why isn't it 8 GB like it should be as it is a standalone installation? https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1833242/page/1#p14187702 Last bumped on Aug 29, 2019, 7:13:49 AM

Actually, it is now 15.1 GB! It added apparently more GB as this was the second time I was trying to open the game (after having freed up several GB after it told me the first time there was not enough space!).
So it has now filled up the additional space I have freed up on the disk. I am going to uninstall this as I can't dedicate 15 GB (or even more, as obviously the next time it is going to tell me again it needs more) to a game. I have to ask again: why doesn't this installation take only 8 GB as I don't have the Steam thing? I downloaded the installer from the website which was a few dozen MB. A lot of content were added since early 2017, so it's normal that the game files have increased and it's not only 8GB anymore. I don't know the current file size but if you can't dedicate at least 15GB - not that big for a game nowadays tbh - then unfortunately there's little to be done.
It's possible to slightly decrease the amount of space the game takes after installation (see this) but it will eventually increase over time. That's just how games that receive updates work. Last edited by Zphyr#7004 on Aug 28, 2019, 10:33:21 PM

" That's ridiculous! That's several times more than the OS itself. Also, it doesn't seem to agree with what several other people said on the thread I linked to - about 8 GB without Steam in 2017. How could it grow from 8 GB to 24 GB in 2 years? Last edited by Momojinjo#1577 on Aug 29, 2019, 4:50:53 AM

nobody is forcing you to use any of GGG software, so if you think it takes to much disk space then uninstall it and all is well.
Also Zphyr already gave you a hit on how to reduce the size on the installed client. |

" Now please don't go all butthurt on me. I seem to have struck a sensitive nerve, but I just gave my opinion on devoting that much disk space to a game. Obviously everybody is free in this to make their own choices, but the issue still remains. I had to uninstall it for now as I simply don't have the disk space, but it's not the best solution as the point is I want to try this game. I understand defragmenting the game file may save another GB or so, but considering we are talking about 20 GB and more here this is not a solution in my view. Think about the user here who has had an additional 16 GB on his disk in just 2 years (an additional 200%). What's next, another 16 GB (or maybe more?) in the next 2 years? I have been playing around with a number of games here on Windows 10 for some time, some Android (normally played on smartphones but playable on Windows through an emulator) such as Stellar Age, and some from Windows Store, and a couple others. Most of them are far under 500 MB, a few reach 1 GB or more. EVE Online is several GB as I remember. To me this is a real issue. Last edited by Momojinjo#1577 on Aug 29, 2019, 6:00:28 AM

@Zphyr - thanks for your info. I was hoping for a real solution to this. I understand the game downloads updates over time, but does it really have to keep all the other stuff on your disk? Is there no other way? It is clear that, with time going on, there is no end to this. In a few years we might be looking at games of 50 GB (maybe not so much to people to whom HDD's of 1 Terabyte or more are already normal, but I think there are many out there who don't have this luxury).

" Well I reply that way because you don't realise what has happend since 2017. Remenber there is 4 L's per year with some of them getting rolled into core. Also GGG's money maker --> MTX with supporter packs. All these things is making the game file size increase. GGG doesn't optimize the code and if you are unhappy with the size of 20G I would have assummed that you would be even more unhappy with the hardware now required to run the game (like SSD for PoE and so on). Sadly this is how it is if you want to use their software and if you are hoping for a fix for this, I don't see this happening..... |
