This.
They already did the same kind of thing with blood and sand, and it worked pretty well.

I assume it is so you can have different minions with different priorities. Maybe you want aggressive golems but defensive zombies.

They could just make equipping a skillgem override the global toggle, for just only that minion type. Allowing players to both set different roles for some minion types, while globally maintaining control of all other minions without any behavior skillgems equipped on them.
I guess my next build will uses Zombies ehehe
Hopefully we get some new zombie mtx now.

They all gain a burning damage aura, dealing fire damage over time to nearby enemies.

Really really REALLY important question.

Will the burning aura be affected by the Ghostflame Summon Raging Spirits MTX? Because at present while this is active, igniting enemies uses Ghostflame Burning visuals. Would extremely appreciate if this is the case and anything near my SRS is on fire with ghostly tealish coloured flames.

Will these gems work with Herald minions? i can imagine a poison Assassin with a HoA as a bodyguard.
Are you sure these are not added as game UI

A very good question, given that other games give you these kinds of things ...

1. Without asking you to give something else up in exchange (ie: a gem slot)
2. While also giving your more flexibility and ease about swapping different minion stances during gameplay and/or directing them to attack specific mobs.

Gem swaps are an awkward substitute for being able to interact directly and quickly with a minion UI on screen to change the stance for particular minion types. Also, why not just add a "minion attack this" cursor to the UI for characters that have minions, which we can set to a hotkey?
Now that prestige classes will finally leave lab in 4.0, will GGG get it right this time or will they find new ways to repeat old mistakes?
I got into PoE through minion builds and it is still my favourite play style. I am planning on a minion instability skele build for 3.8 and these gems may help to increase the clear speed significantly.
