My Contagion + ED wont kill whole Legion, why?

Hey Guys, im having an issue since i started farming with cont + ed. I have 300% area are and more than enough damage to clear the entire legion in less than 2 seconds. But it wont. At the far corners where the rare mobs are or sometimes the other corners, it wont even touch the monsters there. They are literally next to each other but for any reason my contagion isnt spreading to them, area is big enough, duration is long enough (10 seconds) but its not enough.

Does contagion have a spread limit? or a screen limit (2 screens away is ok but we stop at 3 screens you fool) something like that?

I didn't play Contagion, but I think it's the reason :
From 3.6.0 changelog : Contagion can now affect up to 40 targets per cast (from 20).

Try to cast additional Contagions instead of just waiting.

I did not have this problem when I was playing my ED/Contagion starter, however, I'm playing my Cycloner for last 2 weeks so I'm not fully up-to-date on any changes introduced by GGG after I switched. My issue was that single ED was not strong enough to kill some of those tougher rares.

I checked your character profile and gem-links are fine. I would replace Faster Casting with Empower in your ED as it provides huge power boost to your damage, however, if you are farming low level maps this is not important. I do not even use increased duration support on my Contagion as I have skill duration nodes + enchants on my wands that make it last long enough.

What I noticed in maps where there is a lots of obstacles is that Contagion does not spread in AOE to targets that are not in direct line of sight. This means that even if your Contagion has enough AOE to reach all targets, it wont spread to targets not in line of sight, which can break the chaining.
Because contagion has time duration after u cast it, its not refreshes after each kill

So the slowly mobs die, the more chances contagion wont do it to the last mobs

Thats the 1st factor

Second is that mobs are not rendered far away, so what u should do is-

Tap monolith, walk a few away from it, cast contagion+ed to the direction you was going and fast run to opposite direction following contagion wave

If you are farming glacier, you can cast it right from monolith and do a lap around the monolith a few steps away

Edit: want just to reply about inc duraion from the post above-

you need it if the 1st factor applies, its usually in high tier maps, i have 430k chaos per sec tooltip without flasks, just a tooltip in ho, and when i have maps with more hp mods, even that is not enough, i cant kill all mobs in tier 16 that i farm, some rares on one of the edge survive
If I dont reply to you - I dont give a flying duck about your opinion

This can definitely be the culprit here. PoE's engine is rather old and behaves strangely when it comes to distance from objects or enemies. I have not really noticed this issue but I always instinctively moved around map after I cast my ED/Contagion combo. This might have prevented Contagion from expiring before spreading to all monsters.

On topic of skill duration:
Is it possible that ED is expiring before Contagion in situation where your damage is low? OP is using increased duration on Contagion and has no skill duration increased from skill tree or items, which leave ED at its standard duration of 3.8 seconds. My ED lasts over 7 seconds, which is more than enough to kill everything in yellow-tier maps including Legion bosses in a single cast.
Wow guys im impressed by the amount of responses, thank you alot :-)

yea you all made very good points and its simple logic then...thanks i will consider it. I had runs where i cleared the monolith fast and after reading all this its an easy to fix problem

THANKS!

from what i understand after watching and reading many guides about ed+contagion is that after 1st kill by ed the contagion is having dmg of ed on top of its dmg for the duration of the contagion, so the duration of ed you should have enough just for the 1st kil

I always run/flame dash to the ends after casting the first ED/Cont. combo because in almost all cases, one isn't enough to catch them all. Especially indoor maps are a problem and the generals and stronger rares often need an extra kick as well.

I practically only do red tier legions, though, so this might be different if you only farm Glacier.
imho only problem is distance, ED+contagion spreads only like one offscreen, so u have to move around and recast it

and sometimes layout of map works against spreading

Yeah, I often had it that ED wouldn't spread just because the next bunch was standing on the other side of an open door.

It also often happens that the DoT stops working before the hoard or the rare has been broken out because they just have so many hitpoints in red tier maps. I'm often too far away for Malevolence to take effect so especially generals can be a pain as they never break out with just the initial ED/Cont. cast.
