A few ways to screw your build:
- taking Blood Magic too early
- Iron Reflexes on a melee duelist with hybrid armor
- take the crit nodes in the duelist area, thinking you'll get 100% crit (every noobs do that, you can search a few posts about that)

But in the end, it's not that important, like WhiteBoy88 said. What the fuss about no-respec if it isn't that important then?
Do orbs of regret not work on keystones? o_O

I haven't actually opted for any of them yet.

They work, but he didnt think about it.
Well I just hope the few Hardcore enough are enough to keep this game alive. Time will tell though.
Heres a nice example for why I want respecs, look at the build I am using on my cold specced Tempest:

http://i.imgur.com/GrY0U.jpg

When I first looked through and planned the build, I thought that taking the NE tree first was best as this took me in the direction of the elemental damage trees for cold damage, plus other nice things like soul siphon (25 mana gained for each foe killed with those 3 perks which is absolutely fantastic).

I also wanted the N tree as well as it adds lots more elemental damage, spell critical chance, extra damage and range for Ice Nova, and a ring of great mana perks which cover everything I need for mana along with deep wisdom much later on as I spec further to the right for more cold damage and spell critical perks, as well as Chaos Inoculation and Mind Drinker.

Now I just noticed that if I had only just gone north instead of starting out NE, taking a similar progression towards the cold perks would have cost me one point less (look at the green circles vs the red circles). This mistake is completely unfixable now, because I 'gimped' my perk selections right from the start. I could have saved 1 perk point and had 10 less strength which isnt a problem, I only need to take the strength +30 and fitness perks for HP as these are far more cost effective, not the +10 ones that tend to be littered along the way.

I spent ages planning this build, and never noticed that only going N was better. Fortunately since this is only the closed beta, I can carry on for now and then fix it after the server wipe. But if I had done this in the games final release and only realised far too late, I would have been hugely pissed off.

Oh also to point out, I enjoy a good game, I enjoy a good grind, what I dislike is redoing the same grind, for the same character, when you face a potential 100 hours or more to do a max grind on one character.

Just because you can do something one way does not mean you should. Just because I can go out and eat grass and mud does not mean I should not settle for the steak and eggs.

They do, but when you invested 15 points to reach Iron Reflexes, it's just too late and 1 orb of regret won't save it.

That 1 point would change nothing. You didn't screw your build. It's just not perfect. Sell orbs and buy regret, you can respect him. You made a mistake, so you must pay for it with orbs, or new character if you want perfect build.
After going through my whole build plan again, from saving a single point right at the beginning I can now add Arcing Blow (+45% lightning damage on my weapons).

Along with precision, both accuracies, two +30 dex perks and Catalyze, I should be able to clobber things real good with Glacial Hammer plus the Lightning damage buff along with my maxed out cold damage spells.

Yet if I leveled all the way up to 60 and beyond with my initial build, I would have to have started all over again just for the sake of a single perk point to be able to add Arcing Blow.

It changed enough, it allowed me take +45% weapon electrical damage without having to lose an accuracy perk. I would have had to respec the entire tree to change the 4 perks I took at the start.

The last 5 points in the build are easily respeccable between +33% spell damage, mace damage / critical, or Avatar of Fire. I would like to have access to fast and easy respeccing just for those rather than wasting time with looking for the orbs.

OMG...

Orbs of regret are easy to come by. You can find, buy and trade them. And you get 8 respec points from quest (maybe more with the new acts).

If you really spend like 20 skill points to reach a key node that does nothing for your build, maybe you should have invested a little time planning the whole thing.

Generally i think taking skill points is quite safe, the nodes at the start of the classes are quite useful. So you should have at least a few skill points well spend even if you got no clue.

------------------------

My solution:

Combine the Information in the mechanics and new player tips/FAQ threads and try to get new players to read them. maybe with a popup when they open the passive skilltree the first time ingame.

I understand noobs that need respect because their first character is not working. But for your case I don't. Your build is working, it will not improve drastically with that other path. Your just perfectionist that didnt plan good perfect build. You dont need to search for orbs, you'll never find enough, you need to buy them.

yeah, that's why it's annoying to talk with people who don't read previous post ^^;

In the end, the game will have only 3 difficulty levels (6 points then)

Planning the build? What a great idea no one thought about!!! :D

"Iron Reflexes seems cool for my build, I'll take it"
after getting it... "well nope, it sucks! Too bad I had to spend 15 points to try this keystone..."

How can you plan ahead when you don't know the game the first time you try it?

btw, I don't really care anymore about respec because i'm not in the noob phase (and I find the skill tree not challenging at all), I'm just talking about this problem because IT IS a problem when you start the game.
