Combine duplicate skill gems to increase its level

This is a little nifty idea that just occurred to me. Instead of having copious amounts of the same skill collecting dust, why not have a system in place that allows us to combine the alike skill gems increasing the level?

Would also be a good alternative for those of us who find ourselves wanting for this alternative option.

Would be nice to be able to combine a skill gem of the same type to add exp from one to another, or maybe to provide a temporary boost to exp gained by the receiving gem.

Yeah on second thought, your idea is probably the way to go with this.

Also I would love to see maybe a specific mechanic or item that's required of the player to attain in order to combine the skill gems. Think Horadric Cube from Diablo2... ;)

Wouldn't that take away from the need to level up your abilities, though? Just seems like it would take away more than it would add...
