Because there are a limited amount of them and it's no longer obtainable, value of them will only rise as more go out of circulation.

Because it is a limited edition item. There are only a few dozen of them in circulation. It is the mere unique nature of the item that makes it so expensive and sought for. Noone really uses the item on their characters.

like other people have said, it just strokes the e-peen. Some people feel good by owning items in game. It's none of our business why, we just sell them the items and move on :)
