Theory: Cavas is the younger version of The Shaper
RIP theory
(we already know who Cavas is)
The theory in second post is still viable.
Theory RIPPED
It's not hard to realize that Cavas is probably The Shaper, but I wanted to point out some thoughts.
Is Cavas The Shaper in a younger version?
First sign: The Shaper's real name is Valdo Caeserius. VAldo CAeseriuS = CA VA S
Second sign: If we get rid of the letters cavas, we are left with ldo eseriu. This is an anagram for Elderious. I'm not sure what this means tho.
But what's Cavas exactly?
More accurately, Cavas is a "backup copy" of Valdo Caeserius. As we can see, he isn't exactly human. He is more like a ghost.
Cavas was created by Valdo Caeserius when he was young, probably when he started to create and develop the Atlas and start travelling between different worlds (maps).
He did so as a last resort in case something bad happened to both his body and his mind. It's like a "tabula rasa" version of The Shaper and those memory fragments will give rise to the continuity of the history of The Shaper.
Also, we can see an early memory in the trailer with, presumably, his wife and daughter, Zana.

As I wandered this strange new land, I felt a growing sense of realization that I was not alone[...] It was in that moment that I met a fellow wanderer. It was a Shade. It rose and spoke to me not through language, but through thoughts and pictures, colours and emotions, bursting into my mind like water. -Page 3 of the Book of memories

Valdo Caeserius = Cavas + Elderious (anagram)
What does this mean? At first I thought The Shaper and The Elder were the same person, but it doesn't really make sense.
Then I thought that The Elder could be a creation of Valdo Caeserius (The Shaper). Somehow, when he started to work on the artifact and shape the worlds, he gained an incredible power... but at the cost of going crazy.
Now there is a battle in Valdo's powerful and bipolar mind between the light (The Shaper, creator of life) and the dark (The Elder).

They called it the Elder. A creature of malignant madness. Once only an abstract expression, the Elder was given physical form. It entered our realm. It fashioned for itself a bauble of chaos and secret worlds to use as a kind of... hunting ground. This "bauble" is undoubtedly the dreamlands I've uncovered. -Page 9 of the Book of memories

Do you know whats Jungian`s "Shadow" is?
"
In Jungian psychology, the "shadow", "Id", or "shadow aspect/archetype" may refer to (1) an unconscious aspect of the personality which the conscious ego does not identify in itself, or (2) the entirety of the unconscious, i.e., everything of which a person is not fully conscious. In short, the shadow is the "dark side".
Because one tends to reject or remain ignorant of the least desirable aspects of one's personality, the shadow is largely negative. There are, however, positive aspects that may also remain hidden in one's shadow (especially in people with low self-esteem, anxieties, and false beliefs).[1]
Contrary to a Freudian definition of shadow, the Jungian shadow can include everything outside the light of consciousness and may be positive or negative. "Everyone carries a shadow," Jung wrote, "and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is."[2] It may be (in part) one's link to more primitive animal instincts,[3] which are superseded during early childhood by the conscious mind.
Carl Jung stated the shadow to be the unknown dark side of the personality.[4][5] According to Jung, the shadow, in being instinctive and irrational, is prone to psychological projection, in which a perceived personal inferiority is recognized as a perceived moral deficiency in someone else. Jung writes that if these projections remain hidden, "The projection-making factor (the Shadow archetype) then has a free hand and can realize its object—if it has one—or bring about some other situation characteristic of its power."[6] These projections insulate and harm individuals by acting as a constantly thickening veil of illusion between the ego and the real world.
Hmm... my first thoughts upon reading Synthesis news was that Cavas is in the early stages of Alzheimer's and we're exiled to be human cholinesterase inhibitors and be like in Fantastic Voyage and run around inside his brain to find a way to stop his memory deterioration. That doesn't mesh with Cavas being a younger Shaper. I guess I'd have to go all sci-fi then and say Cavas finally regenerated and became Shaper. We can spin this any way we want.

Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration.

Perfectly fit to the Elder figure ;)
That's cool but it fits more in the "Elder is a Shaper creation" theory. It doesn't make sense they are the same person because we fight with both at the same time.

I hope Cavas don't have just Alzheimer xD That would be a boring theory.

Nonono. Actually its perfect fitting too! In psychic integration (i.e. Synthesis (lol)) conscious and unconscious meets each other "face to face".
Tho in a healing session - there is dialogue, not fighting. Fights are for "rudes" and not actually solving problems, but making them more complicated. And inner fights are dividing conscious into more antagonizing parts.
Can say, Shaper guardians may be Shaper parts too, they are guarding core of the main person. And Id is eating this person`n memories and resources.
