crafting an aspect onto an item

Quick question: what happens to the item that is chosen to have an aspect crafted onto it? Are the current mods on it re-rolled into random stuff with just the aspect being the guaranteed outcome, or if an affix is open, the aspect is safely crafted onto the item?

If you already have a crafted mod, the crafted one is overwritten unless you have the 'multiple mods' crafted already.

I already got the answer.
All that is needed is an empty suffix on an item. The aspect will be crated into that slot and will not modify any other affixes on the item. Sitting in HO spamming alts for 4 hours straight is peak PoE gameplay. Thanks, Chris.
