Pace of the game
I can't find a thread about this and I think it's pretty fundamental thing to provide enjoyment of advancing further and good repetitiveness.
I've watched some gameplay videos and all of them looked pretty slowly, monotonous paced. I know it's uberearly stage of things but how do intend to change the pace of the game depending on situation (exp grind/movement from location to location/boss fight etc) and player lvl? I've played few ARPG lately (torchlight, TQ) and all of them felt just boring because of that. Instead push the tempo as I progressed, I was just given stronger wepons/spells and fighting mobs on higher lvls looked pretty much the same as in the beginning. Bang--bang--bang--refill life/mana bang--bang--bang. Made me sleepy :> Game which we're constantly comparing poe to has got it nicely. Increased attack speed, faster cast, faster recover after being hit, faster block not only higher dmg bigger weapons and more wham bam shazam spells. And last but not least faster more nasty monsters not only better dmg/hp wise. How do you want to manage it guyz? And since it's a forum how are you think it should work folks? :> I know it's a wide topic, aside from skills and mobs, level design, (gui) field of view and few other things can affect it so don't restrain yourself :) | |
" The pacing problem with TorchLight might be the fact that you do the same three quests over and over. Having said that, I thought the game had a cool feel (any game where Matt Uelmen does the music would I suppose). The only pacing problem I had with TQ was the first act. It just seemed to be much longer than the others and it kind of dragged on. Having a long act isn't a bad thing necessarily, maybe it was just cause the scenery didn't change much and you kept fighting the same monsters over and over. The other acts were way more fun. I remember fighting on the Great Wall in act 3 and thinking Holy God, this is awesome. Or that dungeon in act five with pieces of the floor missing and what looked like some distant galaxy beneath. Enemies would fall into it as you bashed them, that was cool. Given all of the different areas and monsters they've announced for Act 1, plus the fact that they haven't even showed us all of Act 1 yet, I'm not too worried about PoE. I am a poor freezingly cold soul
So far from where I intended to go |

from the movies it looks like eventually you can build a rather spamtastic , very busy , action oriented character . seems like it should work out ok . like i say if the action is good everything else is secondary . if you feel excited , entertained , busy , challenged then everything will just fall into place unless horribly borked in some way . *falling through the world , getting stuck , mobs oneshotting YOU , etc* --- .

Well its a hack-and-slash, doubt its gonna be quest heavy - if you want decent quests this is just not the genre for you.
A lot of good "open world" games came out latly with a decent atmosphere and nice Quests. Personally when i want to play a hack-and-slash i don´t care about quests. Diablo is a perfect example for that - absolute minimum quests/story to keep the "RPG" fraction happy, but not too much to scare off people who just like to walk out of town to "kill stuff". Offtopic: I´m kinda scared of the hole free-to-play thing.Already played a bunch of F2P games (LoL etc) and it definatly attracts a lot of "unwanted" people. I dunno about the PvP system here, but that was already a PITA for Diablo2. Combining F2P with PvP for a (already kiddy infested) Diablo-clone-genre gonna get mad annoying.Hopefully there is going to be an alternative to avoid the majority of people, but don´t see how its going to be possible within the currenty scenario. Personally i would rather pay 50€ and eventually some bucks monthly for a high quality game with decent people around than pay nothing and be surrounded by kiddies and "hackers". If you don't like kids just swear at them. They will try report you then realize they wont get help because its not Mapple Story/Runescape then quit. Problem solved. I don't think PoEs style will attract kids anyway.
On the topics note. If you have seen one of the first trailers it shows the amazon like character with lots of gems in her bow. Shooting fast , multiple and piercing projectiles. Looked like fast scaling combat to me :) Cheaper than free... Speedtree

Diablo + D2 + LoD
Worth every buck. No other game of the genre even came close to it so far. There are also a few very good mods out for the game. Dungeon Siege: I still can´t believe i bought this.Only thing i liked was the party system and thats about it. Torchlight: I just hated the comic-style and that was a main reason to stop playing it. Was still worth the few bucks though. Titan Quest: Bought it for the full price when it came out and was literally had to force me to play it.Single Player was dull at best and only the Multiplayer mode with a couple friends was alright. I wouldn´t buy it again. Sacred: Good game. Some minor flaws but overall i enjoyed it. OT: Well i´ve seen the difference. ~4 years of retail DaoC (MMORPG) then ~1 year on Freeshards. There are jerks everywhere, but for every jerk on the official server there was like 50 for the shards.Really killed the game experience for me. Was pretty much the same for Lineage 2 Freeshards. People scamming each other and tons of "botting" going on. League of Legends (F2P dota game) was pretty simmilar.Soo many annoying people around untill you´ve reached a decent ELO. I´m afraid to say it, but F2P = bad community. More like "Path of Kiddy Hell"

grouping and hunting are instanced so annoying little kiddies cannot bother you while you play . since standard hunting is instanced it is separate from pvp, again no kiddies to worry about . as for the pvp itself - not much info . play with 'friends' or play alone and you will do fine . --- .

Man I was really confused until I saw the date because PoE is one of the fastest ARPGs once you've leveled up and equipped your char a bit.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.
