[3.5] Ice Spear CoC Deadeye AKA Ice Laser (Cheap) (Endgame Viable) (Shaper DOWN)
Hey guys, Leysonic here. I never thought that I would ever write a build guide but there have been several people in pubs who have asked for one so here it is!
With the coming of 3.5 were several skill gem changes that made this build possible.
Ice Spear had been reworked to give huge single target potential with the abiliy to use all its projectiles to hit a single target.
Cast on Crit has also been buffed to have an internal cooldown lowered to 0.15s, allowing around 7 triggers per second.
Finally, the new skill Lancing Steel is the ideal way to trigger cast on crit as it has a long range and can hit the same target multiple times with a single attack.
Putting all these three together is a beast of a character launching up to 56 ice spears per second!
Other awesome builds:
t16 phoenix (-max, crit)
t16 chimera (monster life, damage and speed)
t12 map run
-Look awesome shooting out so many ice spears it looks like a laser beam
-Very powerful single target
-Safe play style freezing everything a screen away
-Can't do ele reflect
This build requires a variety of support from ascendancy choice which deadeye provides:
- crit chance
- attack speed (with tailwind)
- life gain on hit
While other choices might provide more of a single aspect (assassin for more crit / inquisitor for more damage) they do not provide the wide range of support that allows this build to shine.
We dual wield swords to make use of the Twin Terrors passive branch which adds 125% crit chance while dual wielding. This along with the Fatal Blades branch allows us to not use the Increased Critical Strikes support gem and use Hypothermia for more damage.
-high attack speed
-high crit chance
Starkonja gives life, crit chance and attack speed.
Rats nest if you want to sacrifice life for more damage.
ENCHANT IS IMPORTANT. Get the power charge on crit enchant to boost lancing steel crit chance.
Many options are viable but I chose to go with Belly for more life.
Others include Loreweave (hard to get right colours), Lightning Coil, Daresso's Defiance, Shroud of the Lightless
Rares with life/resists.
If you have walord's mark on hit ring you can use the spare mana for aspect of the spider aura.
Rares with life/resists/movespeed.
Stygian Vise for extra jewel slot with life/resists.
Alternatively you can get a shaper belt with Cooldown Recovery Speed but is a more expensive option.
Rares with minimum crit multi/life/resists.
The Pandemonius is the great amulet but it is very expensive at the moment.
Yolk of Suffering is also very nice but expensive as well.
Mark of the Shaper gives us up to 100% increase spell damage (with an elder ring equipped) which this build sorely needs.
Alternate option: rare opal ring with life/resists/crit multi
Rare elder ring with life/resists.
Would be ideal to also have Curse Enemies with Warlord's Mark affix but this is also very expensive.
Rares with crit multi
Other useful mods - life/spell damage/cold damage/projectile damage.
Main CoC setup
Lancing Steel - Cast on Critical Strike - Ice Spear - Cold Penetration - Greater Multiple Projectiles - Hypothermia
KEEP LANCING STEEL AT LVL 1 TO PRESERVE MANA
Order of importance
1) Lancing Steel - Cast on Critical Strike - Ice Spear - Greater Multiple Projectiles
2) Cold Penetration
Hypothermia can be subbed for Increased Critical Strikes or if you feel your crit is too low or power charge on crit if you don't have the helm enchant.
Herald of Ice
Blasphemy - Warlord's Mark
(if you already have a ring with curse on hit warlord's mark you can use Aspect of the Spider)
Whirling Blades - Faster Attacks - Fortify
Cast when Damage Taken
CWDT - Increased Duration - Immortal Call - Frostbomb
CWDT - Cold Snap - Summon Ice Golem
Vaal Righteous Fire
WHY NO SPELL CRIT ON TREE?
Ice spear second form has 600% increased critical strike chance which is more than enough. Getting more is a waste of points.
When mapping you can cast lancing steel then whirling blades INTO the pack for better clear.
For bosses whirl AWAY from the boss and make sure ice spear transitions into its second form before hitting the target.
Rupture -> Powerful Precision -> Gathering Winds -> Fast and Deadly
Depends on preference but I chose
Soul of the Brine King
Soul of Tukohama
Level with swords (dual wield preferably) and use spectral throw.
Spectral Throw - Added Fire - Greater Multiple Projectiles - Vicious Projectiles - Faster Attacks
Upon reaching blood aqueducts is a good time to transition into cast on crit gem setup and level the gems.
WHY NOT USE BELTIMBER?
The most important things of a Cast on Crit build is having very high attack speed and very high crit chance. Beltimber has none of them.
Surely the extra projectiles will carry our damage?
They do help a lot but since the weapon crit chance is too low, you are forced into using increased critical strikes support and drop hypothermia/cold penetration. In the end you will be doing around 12% less damage. On top of this your attack speed will be lower meaning you may not reach the CoC cooldown of 0.15s in single target situations.

Looks pretty bonkers. How would this hold up in HC SSF? is it playable without mark of shaper/starkonja

I think it would be very possible in HS SSF. Although I would be make several changes such as
-using increased critical strikes as the 6th link
-not use dual wield and using a tanky shield instead
You could easily play it without mark of shaper/starkonja. You will lose a bit of damage but have more chances to cap resistances with rares.

Looks cheap and powerful. How would this do SSF (no uniques) and with a 5L dropping controlled destruction?

None of the uniques are build defining so it should work fine in SSF. Yes, if you using a 5l dropping controlled destruction is totally ok.
