YouTube kinda sucks now.

It’s like Facebook with it’s algorithm curated feed. Boring af. They think their robot* knows what I want to watch better than I do. In their valiant effort to overthrow the dull gimmicks of television, they became television. It used to be good when it was YouTube vs. The World.

*Also, there’s a nonzero chance they’re just using us to train their robot army.

Yea those recommended videos are mostly the popular and political correct stuff. I fully disabled all the google recommendations and usually login to my account right away to see my subscription page.

Never trust and algorithm to tell you what you want specially if you are into off-mainstream content.

It really kinda does. But habit and convenience ...

not really you are just watching the wrong channels

I have to agree. If you have never curated your home page for an extensive period of time then sorry but your lawn got overgrown. I've been curating and monitoring my personal algorithm for many years now and it is spectacular most days. Clicking the "not interested" button is not enough as well, you need to select "tell us why" box all the time and specify reasons, this way clicking random links from the web will not demolish your preferences.
Be ready. You're not paranoid, you're PREPARED.

Nonono. YouTube used to introduce you to random shit, and it was great. My problem is not with what is being shown to me, it’s with what isn’t. It’s that no matter how you use YouTube, it is nothing more than an echo chamber. By design. It’s still the world largest video library, and very useful for research (e.g., designing greenhouses with innovative engineering), but it’s no longer fun for wasting fifteen minutes. Just one never ending page of the same shit it shows me every day.

YouTube was great when it didn’t curate anything, and allowed you to explore in whichever vector you wanted.

CHP, the reason you're not seeing all those beautiful random non-echo-chamber videos is because John and his ilk kept on clicking that they're not interested in them — in some cases, emphatically, violently disinterested — and told YouTube why.
When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted.

Content curation is why Big Business keeps straining and clenching and sweating and striving to secure all that information it knows bloody well nobody wants to give it. The whole freaking idea is trying to tailor someone to a "feed" that drips them things - including advertisements - that they're more likely to click on, because clicks generate revenue.

Anyone who helps the system curate content for them may as well not bother with any privacy tools anymore period. If you believe remotely in the concept of digital privacy, then content curation should be the reason you believe in digital privacy and should be deeply offensive to you on a personal level.

I will decide what I want to watch or not watch myself, thank you very much YouToogle.

Pretty sure if they're coming for me based on taking an interest in me out of billions then I'm a chaotic trickster god in a coming age of faith and don't know it.

I have ruined youtube but they forced me to! I remember years ago a friend sent me a youtube link with some content I found honestly uh, not for me and that was the joke. For whatever reason for the next three weeks youtube kept recommending me videos from that channel to the point that it was mildly embarrassing to show anyone my home page so I decided to purge it manually.

Anyhow, I still to this day get good recommendations and I do not mean 50th welding video or a 100th photography video, their bots even managed to identify me as a political fencer and recommend me videos about one subject from two opposing views, that actually impressed me. Them bots manage to find most things I don't know about but they know I want this type of knowledge (like a new hobby I had no idea exists) and for the love of gods, I am honestly not interested in viral videos or whatever is entertaining or humorous at the moment. I miss nothing from the past youtube.
