You're def right about the differing priorities. On the flip side, the upfront pay models don't really have incentive to add more content until they can get another upfront cost from you (DLCs). So even if the final release is MASSIVE, you're talking a couple hundred hours of play before people want more. But chances are expansions/DLCs will be once a year if not less. Probably less.

This is the advantage F2P games have. They are under constant pressure to reinvent and keep the game interesting somehow or the revenue stream dies.

I am def looking at Wolcen more like a single player, witcher-like game experience in terms of expectation than expecting it to compete with PoE's league model where every 3 months I am motivated to come back and no-life again.

Indeed. Also, F2P's true revenues and profits are hidden, thus masking what level of development players should expect. Non-F2P's revenues are easily estimated on the other hand, often creating more expectations despite lower cash generation.

Pumped about Wolcen though, was initially disappointed about GD, then I made the effort to get into it (the expansion anyway). Initially it felt so weird not trading and so on, then after a while I realized I wasn't farming "gold" but items, and that I could play as I wished due to no "bullshit inflation economy" (note: another way for create addiction, "force" more time investment). In the end, it felt awesome although the game felt a lot more limited.
wolcen looks pretty epic from the little i've looked at it. but i'll never "purchase" a game in development again. i refuse to. the model is stupid and sketchy and just doesn't live up to peoples expectations when paying full price for half a game and crap like that.

so when it gets released, as in finished, i'll definitely take a harder look at it.
Finally after 3 years its hitting beta. But they plan on only ever having act 1 in the beta. So we are stuck with just act 1 for probably 1.5 - 2 years while they make acts 2 - 5. Its gonna be awhile before it has enough content to really devote a lot of time to.
So I have been keeping one eye on a few of these "PoE-like" games (not going to name any names), and to be brutally honest, my opinion seems to be mostly "Let's make PoE 2.0, just fix all the things that we don't like about PoE". Which is fine... if you agree on which things are wrong with PoE and what is a good way of fixing them.

I don't really feel like investing time and money into games whose only selling point is one-upping PoE, when I could be just... playing PoE. If there is something that would win me over, it would take more than just "fixing" things which I might or might not consider an issue. I would like to see some genuine innovation, not just a slightly reworked crafting system or skill tree or some small mechanical gimmick or whatever.

I don't want a game to do things better. I want a game that tries to do new things. Until such a game comes around, I think I'll stick with what I know and like.

I'm not quite sure about it yet, but the upcoming new torchlight title might be worth a look. From what I heard it'll definitely be something rather innovative, people called it mmo without being mmo. Since I liked both torchlight games, I will definitely observe the news regarding this one.
I make dumb builds, therefore I am.
I bought into Wolcen almost a year ago, will play it when the "new" stuff comes out in September.
~ Please separate the PoE1 and PoE2 forums.
Wolcen looks really cool. Remember seeing it first back during 3.0
I like the idea of the turning camera angle- especialy if its not a one hit pack game. That can go a long way. The transformations look cool, just hope they arent like "uber great" to the point where thats all people really care about.

I dont get the fascination that playing with friends all the time is so much better then single. There is nothing like speed running a penninula or a gorge with a ton of movement speed onslaught, one hitting packs and keeping all the loot for yourself in my own opinion. I personally hope wolcen wont give us that. Going fast is awesome, but doesnt need to be in every action rpg. I hope action rpgs stay along the lines of its the first time playign one- where there is a good story line and a reason to enjoy the journey as much as the gameplay. I will always say final fantasy was the best game ever, because you coulndt trade the loot and had to journey to new places to get it (in those days you didnt skip the dialogue). If I were poe - I would make a season were people were forced to listen to dialogue = maybe add dialogue to each map with a giant smiley face with a tongue sticking out at you in the top right corner :P

Just search for Torchlight Frontiers and you should get all the info that's currently available.
