Pause in SSF mode

Stick in a socket and put portal on your skill bar. Surely 2 button presses won't take long to get used to.

You're also not playing in hardcore so you can always just die and don't click on the resurrect button. It's like a pause that won't make you lose your instance. :P
Just a lowly standard player. May RNGesus be with you.

Pause SSF mode?? So you can trade, gear the character and then go back to SSF? That would defy the whole point of SSF!

If you are tired of SSF, but don't want to end it, just 'pause' - simply switch to another, non-SSF, character and play it until you want to play SSF again.

While this is all true, I didn't think a pause functionality would be too controversial a thing to ask for. It's just something that seems to be oddly missing (while solo). I was pretty surprised (sure, I started playing back in closed beta, but had forgotten how this all worked - and that was back in a time where I had lots of free time in college :() to see my game not pause when I hit Esc in a solo instance.

Just my 2 cents that it would be a nice QoL addition.

I mean a simple pause functionality where the game stops and allows you to do something else. I only suggested it to be in SSF mode because you're already forced to play solo and obviously you wouldn't be able to pause with anyone else in your party/instance, so I figured this would be the easiest place to insert it.

I don't play SSF myself, but I'd gladly switch to it if it allowed me to pause (since I don't typically trade or party with others, anyways) :P
You understand that any game with a persistent online connection cannot have "pause"?

Whenever the game dies and (hopefully) they release an offline client, THEN you may get your pause.

Warframe does so why not? Is it somehow different than Poe?

Pausing in online games has been possible for a very long time. I remember pausing Warcraft 3 when playing online like a decade ago.

I see it in the eyes of men and beasts that i troll. It will take me to play the actual game when i am ready and i am not ready.

Yes, Warframe is very very different:

Pausing in Warframe only works in a solo mode and doesn't work in certain zones or while certain things are happening, for example Plains of Eidolon because of the day/night cycle since they're server and not client side or while dying. Solo mode has a lot of things only happen on the client side of the game until you complete a mission and the loot is being handed out.
This is why you won't get kicked from the game in solo mode if your internet connection breaks for a moment and this is also why you won't see specific warframe parts drop from bosses or arcanes from Eidolons in your loot log until you've completed the mission.

Path of Exile doesn't behave like that at all because of the loot system and because of exploits(like dupes) and bots or similar things. There's no way to compare these two games.

Sure, but Poe doesn't have a day/night cycle and you don't care about pausing if you die since that's why you want to pause in the first case.

Not sure why you bring up how loot is processed, it has no bearing on the pause function since you don't get loot drops when you pause. If you are trying to say that pausing is impossible because of the loot system I'd like to point out that shaper already pauses the game when he appears on regular maps. There is no harm in letting the player do the same when he is on ssf or just plays solo.

There are plenty games out there that prove that pausing games with an online-connection is perfectly feasible. D3 and Warframe habe it in solo-mode. Pretty any current RTS have this solved even for multiplayer like Warcraft 3, Star Craft 2, and the Age of Empires/Mythology series. Only if there is a persistent world is running on the servers like in any MMO, pausing is not feasible, since it would require stopping the whole server for every player (this also the case for the Plains of Eidolon in Warframe due to MMO-like design).

There are also good solutions to deal with exploiting pausing for investigating difficult encounters. Many games just put a hugh bar on screen blocking the sight during the pausing.

However, I highly doubt that PoE is designed to support pausing, and it is very hard to add it later on. There are so many possible racing condition due to concurrent actions of client and server.
If you remember all the trouble with out-of-sync then you know what these racing conditions can cause. Therefor, I would not be supprised if adding pausing to PoE would result in a full remake of client and server.

Anyways, If GGG is planing this in the future, I would love to see pausing added.

Untill then, there are plenty work-arounds (including a loss of xp, portal, map,...) which are already mentioned in this thread.

IMHO there are much more important issues, where GGG should have a look at first, but I am not the one writing the priority list for GGG...

@Pyrokar

Server checks that have to happen for PoE consistantly because PoE has barely anything that happens on the client side. The lootsystem will just prevent certain moments from pausing. It's just one reason for certain moments, a simple example I wanted give you basically.
Shaper doesn't pause the game. He freezes certain animations while his own animation is still happening. It's basically a cutscene. You can even ID your inventory while the animation is happening because the server still check for it. It's not even close to pausing the game and just a visual effect.

Yes, there is no harm. Nobody said there's a harm in doing that but it's currently not possible unless they would change the game in a big way which would probably result in an offline mode anyway and would require a lot of resources that could be spent on something more useful. Until then you'll just have to use the instant logout as an option to pause the game.

Please, don't compare PoE to other games for this topic. PoE works very differently.
