Templar Build Questions

I'm looking to start up a Templar but I'm not sure about how I want to develop him. What I don't understand is why the wand Templar builds don't start using wands from the beginning. What are the draw backs of starting out wand + shield vs 1H melee + shield, 2H or Bow?

I have many of the low level skill (Intel and Strength) gems and some low level gear/weapons to start with.

Lastly, can someone link build guides for Bow and a 2H melee Templar?
