PoE causing my computer to restart
Hello,
For about the past 4 days while playing Path of Exile -and only while playing Path of Exile- my computer is losing power and suddenly restarting. I strongly suspect it is a PoE issue and *not* a hardware issue because I can play any other games (Overwatch Ultra settings, Pillars of Eternity, Skyrim Max settings, Starcraft II Ultra settings), and run any other program, for hours on end without issue. With PoE I have maximum 20 minutes before my computer loses power and restarts. Please let me know if there is anything you would recommend. I've summarized my specs, PoE settings, attempts to fix, and event viewer logs. My PC specs are: OS: Windows 7 SP1 CPU: Intel i7-6700k 4GHz GPU: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB MOBO: Asus Z170-E RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR3000 SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB PSU: EVGA SuperNova G2 550W My PoE Options are: -VSync Off -Dynamic Resolution Off -Water Detail Low -Shadow Quality Low -AA Off -Texture Quality High -Texture Filtering Trilinear -Lighting Quality Medium -Post Processing On -Screen Shake On -Multithreading Off -DirectX 11 What I've tried so far: -Reinstalled PoE -Checkdisk on C Drive -Malware Scan -MSE Scan -Temp check (neither CPU or GPU are overheating) -Running PoE in fullscreen, windowed, and windowed full screen -Updated video card drivers Event viewer is not that helpful. Around the times of the crashes I simply get Error / Event Log / ID 6008 The previous system shutdown at 9:42:25 AM on 5/27/2018 was unexpected. Critical / Kernel-Power / ID 41 (63) The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. Essentially generic messages "we lost power and we don't know why." Thank for reading! Last bumped on Dec 9, 2024, 9:17:03 PM

To point out the obvious, games to not hard crash PC's, it might happen during playing one but it's not the cause.
Drivers, settings, overheating and failing hardware are among the causes for this sort of thing...even some program running can cause issues (corsair link) Keep checking the logs, go back further to see if anything is before the generic "rebooted without cleanly shutting down first" Also pastebin your dxdiag and post the link Ancestral Bond. It's a thing that does stuff. -Vipermagi

Thanks for the replay.
Here's the pastebin link from Dxdiag: https://pastebin.com/tNgvEGsL Fyi I don't have Corsair link installed. There does seem to be a pattern in the event viewer. Before all my crashes I get the following error: Error / Kernel-Event Tracking / ID 3 (Session) Session "Microsoft Security Client OOBE" stopped due to the following error: 0xC000000D I'll do some searching to see if this could be a cause or a result - any thoughts on this one? Thanks! |

The other error you mention dose seem to be the source of the PC restarting.
And there seems to be a few fixes. The simplest seems to be the removal of this file C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft Security Client\Support\EppOobe.etl Though depending on where you read that may or may not work.
Spoiler
This procedure appears to solve the issue.
It MUST be done Exactly by the Steps. 1. DISABLE the Microsoft Antimalware Service 2. REBOOT the machine 3. DELELETE the EppOobe.etl File (Reference Path) C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft Security Client\Support\EppOobe.etl 4. REBOOT the machine 5. ENABLE the Microsoft Antimalware Service 6. REBOOT the machine 7. Frequently CHECK the Administrative Events Log under Custom Views to ensure the error does not reappear. NOTE: Just Deleting the EppOobe.etl file and Rebooting will NOT work. Rick P. The most permanent one looks to be uninstalling it and using a different AV. It is curious that it only seems to be when playing PoE, are they at or around the same time each time it happens (maybe an auto scan) Coupled with you playing at those times for the last 4 days where as before you were not? Thanks for the help diagnosing.
I've been too busy to play much recently, but the problem seems to be fixed. I uninstalled MSE, deleted the suggested file, and turned off the error reporting for that issue and I haven't experienced any freezes recently. Really disappointed that the issue was caused by a Microsoft product. |

Nope.
Ok I'm at my wits end. I had more time to play and I cannot go more than 20 minutes without my power being cut. Again this only ever happens when I am playing POE. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you for reading. |

Its 2023 now and I'm having a very similar issue even down to the logs. My pc has only crashed so far while playing poe and its always memory management. I'm about to try to recreate it on other games though. I have a 2080 super an I7 9700f and 16 gb of ram, xmp is turned on. Did you end up solving your problem?

Yes I did solve this issue thankfully.
I'm having to dig in my memory, but I'm pretty sure it was my power supply was flaking out. Really weird, because when there is a hardware problem I expect it to impact everything on a PC, yet this one impacted only POE. bought a new power supply and my computer has run just fine ever since. Another issue I faced in 2018 was related to video card drivers. I made the mistake of checking "express install" on nVidia drivers, and one of the extra software packages from nVidia caused my computer to crash extremely frequently. I had to completely remove all traces of video card drivers from the computer (involved going into safe mode IIRC) and then re-installing the drivers only. good luck! |

I really don't understand from a technical point of view, what are you saying lagwin1980#2224 because the ETL file it is just a trace log file, does not make any sense if you delete the trace log file your problem is solved
