Game Support asks me to create a "Throwaway Account" - Legit?

I contacted support to disable the email verification when my IP changes, they asked me a series of tasks and now they also request to create a "throwaway account" and tell them the name of the character I created.

Is this legit? are they making fun of me or something? did anyone had similar experience? first time in my gaming life a company tells me to create a 2nd account for some kind of weird verification that its actually me (doesn't even make sense)?

I just don't anymore.
Ok, just a simple questio here... do you UNDERSTAND what you're asking them to disable?
I make dumb builds, therefore I am.
They will verify that the second account you create and character you make is connected to the same IP address you are at and not halfway across the world from you. They do take security seriously and this is a way they can make sure it is you and not someone who has taken over your account. After the email is cut off you lose that protection of being able to keep someone from else from logging into your account from another location. You will have no protection - so when you accidentally give your password out to some random website and your account gets stolen - support will not be responsible because you requested it.

Contact support@grindinggear.com to report issues relating to the game or forum. Thanks!

My beloved pets....
Do not disable that feature... Bad idea.
You may have some sort of system like vpn changing ip alot which would be annoying, however its for your accounts safety.
Thanks everyone for the responses I guess it makes sense even though it's super weird.

I was never hacked and my passwords will take a couple of billion years to guess, if someone prefer to waste his time hacking my POE account instead of my email or bank account then I should be considered lucky..

Key logger says HI.

As dose the hacked account details/passwords from some other game which had it's database breached (and you apparently used the same password...happens way to often)

steam is more secure and reliable than ip-shit..

get steam and activate otp if you really care about it

i also think enabling this ip-shit is really stupid since its not a pay2win game.
To answer your question: yes, this seems to be their common course of action for some security related things.
I've lost access to the e-mail account my POE account was created with, the procedure that followed was lengthy and involved the creation of a throwaway char. (Even though my IP changed twice since then, it is semi-static).
Cheers

And yet it uses a very similar system but less strict on the IP address and more for a location, it can also send you a verification code if locked but has both email and i believe SMS, whichever you choose.
And the same shit applies there as here, it's not like steam can't be hacked.
