Correct. Anything with the "spell" tag will be disabled.

I used it with some success last league. It's definitely something you have to build around though, not just slap it on any random build and expect it to work.

160 life and 100% global phys is mental for level 38 or whenever you are able to use it. It doesn't have to be the best late-game chest for any build to be worth using.
If you do want to use it late game, it seems to lend itself to a bleeding build well. Face it, all of your suggestions are worse than this idea:
