online-gaming with a friend / xbox membership

Heya,

as you know, if you want to play PoE online with a friend on Xbox, you need a charged XBox live membership.

As there is no couch/sofa-modus (like in Diablo 3 - up to 4 players on same TV/Console), this is currently the only way to play with friends.

So my question - is there any change in process of planning?

either -

a) to introduce a sofa/couch modus like with Diablo 3

or

b) to allow somehow to play PoE without the need of having a charged xbox live membership?

Thanks!

I've read that GGG is attempting to work on this for XBox since couch co-op has been a frequently requested feature. The final verdict, from what I remember, is that they expect to have some update on this sometime this year. (2018)

Currently, I'm not aware of any co-op games that use standard multiplayer play that do not require an XBox Live membership. That's one way console producers like Microsoft and Sony make their money. In general, AFAIK, all connections go through Microsoft for the Xbox, which includes any server hosting that needs to be done as well as updates, patches, player matching, friend's lists, etc.. I don't know how that works specifically for PoE, but I don't see why there would be any change from Microsoft's standard practices.

ie: The actual multiplayer server, if it's not a console hosted game, is usually hosted by Microsoft and not owned/hosted by the developer/producers. So, that cost has to be defrayed, somehow, and that's where the Xbox Live membership gets "justified." I welcome any corrections to that assumption, though, if PoE has some sort of different arrangement. (Provide a link if possible.)

There are actually quite a few out there. Halo MCC & 5, Left 4 Dead 2, Overcooked, Borderlands, etc.. They list quite a few more over https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/7gdp2h/planning_a_lan_party_are_there_any_good_xbox_one/.

But it would be kinda nice to see PoE do this too. My only worry is it will turn into another open Battlenet...

OK well - the advantage of couch co-op would be, that only one person have to get the active XBoX Live membership.

If I only want to play with my buddy @ couch, and he doesn't want to pay the membership, then this would be a good solution.
How anyone that owns an X Box and does not have X Box Live is beyond me.

Thanks for that list! But, none of these would be able to use the standard multiplayer mode, just LAN, correct?

I agree, a Battlenet choice would be awesome. Anyone wonder why D2 has gone on for so long, besides the fact that it's a great game? Battlenet...

However, it's Microsoft's box and they make the rules.

Some people can't afford it. Some may have never had a game that demanded it. Parents might not agree to it or pay for it, etc... There are plenty of reasons why someone may not have it. I do agree that it severely limits one's choices and options, but that sort of thing happens to everyone at one time or another.

Borderlands 1 / 2 / Handsome can be 2 player split screen.

Left 4 Dead 2 can be 4 player split screen, co-op or VS. 8 player (must have atleast 2 consoles) VS.

Halo can be 4 player split screen. 16 player with multiple consoles.

All of these can use the standard multiplayer lobbies if 1 person on each console has Xbox gold. If no one has gold, yes you would be limited to split screen / LAN.

Hi,

just one more question-

@ X Box Microsoft Live, there is no LAN-possibility or?

For example:

One shared flat with a flat mate, 2 different X Box One which are in 2 different rooms. Just one guy has the xbox live membership, the other one hasn't.

still no possibility to play together, regardless we share the same network or?

thanks!

€:

I found "X Box Live Home Gold" -one household, but all persons can use it?

I think the point being you are doing peer to peer gaming not Server->Client, that is why we have to have the Live account. It stinks yes, but I don't think PoE can do anything about it without completely changing the game model.

Couch co-op would not require it and it is great that solo play does not.

The games I listed above can be played on the same network with NO Xbox Live required, # of consoles does not matter. But you can not play against other that are not on your network.
