Elder retreated 9 maps from just doing one

NONE of that makes any practical sense. My 15-map Elder blob that was chopped down to 7 in one fell swoop was at least 3 maps wide in every direction. There was no single map whose loss could have cut it into two disconnected blobs. (That's why I'm personally skeptical of the Shaper sneak attack theory.) I have a simpler explanation:

The Atlas Influence system is NOT just gated by RNG, IT IS BROKEN.

From your image it looks like it was a bog map that was taken over from the shaper and split your elder blob. You gave the shaper the waste pool map the he took the initiative and took bog. The RNG is stupid I agree but that's what happened. If you're looking to spawn the red elder you need to have bog and waste pool elder controlled anyway so you might as well leave it next time.

Yup. It looks like you ran a bog map instead of waste pool. If you are using vaals that would be an easy mistake to make.
OP here, I was wondering why GGG moved my thread despite me not posting on it for ages...

I definitely ran a Elder Controlled Waste Pool to "trim" off his influence back then. I later learned that it was a bad idea. It's still a bit crazy that Shaper can move 2 spaces from 1 action, but still, fine. I've also done a Shaper controlled Waste Pool before just to have him snip off Elder's control off Bog and beyond too. That one's a bit more dodgy (no screenshot atm unfortunately).

Still in the process of spawning my T15 Elder. Literally just got him on T14 :(

Anyway, point of the thread is I guess, that the Elder spawn is RNG mechanics while already dealing with RNG mechanics while trying to spread him. Double the frustration.

Someone reported it to the moderators as in the wrong section, FWIW. GGG are not super-proactive about moving stuff around without reports, which is why they can be sometimes quite delayed if, for example, someone was to necro them :)
I can sympathize... I was up to 17 maps influenced last night when I went to drive the Shaper out of #18. Finished up the map, checked my Atlas to figure out where to go next and I was down to 9. Swore for a few minutes, logged out, and called it a night. :(

Guess I need to start watching for places the Shaper can come from the lower tiers to cut off a section.
