How to throw nets??

Sounds like a dumb question but at the start of act 1 I had no problems throwing nets and capturing beasts. I was pressing Y to throw nets and captured about 10 beasts doing so. Then after I got some new skill gems I
Binded ancestral protector to the Y button since then I cannot figure out how to throw a net. I have a few different types of nets in my inventory, I've hit A to equip them and it's no where on my list of available skills and not binded to any button. I'm all the way to act 6 and haven't captured anything since act 1. please help! Thank you

Hello,

When in a world area outside of town or your hideout press 'R3' (Push right thumbstick in) to bring up the skill binding menu - you should see the net icon listed in here if you've equipped a net from your inventory.
Yea , IMO its not the most user friendly mechanic, at least for xbox. My biggest gripe with it really my only one is the fact we have to take up a valuable skill slot for it. Jeff any reason why we cant just have the net bound and thrown to the left thumb-stick ) press ) ? Six skill slots and I am still starving for more on some characters, seems kinda anti user to take up a slot for a league mechanic but thats just me.

I do really enjoy this league though, you guys did great on it, Is there a chance this will be become a permanent fixture for he game?, all the UI work, and mechanics seem like a waste to just abandoned it after the league. I for one would like to have a perma-menagerie.
This isn't working for me. I've equipped nets, tried different types of nets but there is still no net skill icon. I've tried dropping all my nets, I've tried clearing skills from buttons, still no net skill to bind. Fyi i took 2 chara past lvl 90 last league so i know my way around the game pretty well, atleast i thought i did...

You can't do anything with them while in Town, in your Hideout, or in the starting zone for running Labs.

You have to be in an area that can have hostile mobs before you can equip and select them.

Even so, it does sometimes bork up... When that happens, I assign a skill to that button selection using the regular Skills menu, use that skill, then click on a Net in my inventory, use the Righ-Joystick-Down option to bring up the hot-menu for assigning skills, hit the "A" button to "Assign Skill", highlight the Net icon using the Right stick, then, because I have it assigned to a Trigger/Button combo, press the Right Trigger, highlight the desired button using the Right stick, then click "A" while the Net and the selected button combo is highlighted.

Sorry for going through all that, but that's the step-by-step I use to "fix" this problem.

Aaaaand... It doesn't always work the first time. :) But, it generally works the second time. ;)
I've been trying it out of town, even twice while I was being attacked by a monster I wanted to capture. When you click down on the right stick are you in the inventory tab or skills tab? I've tried both...i don't know what else to do.

thanks for the reply, i really want to get this figured out, frustrating as hell.

You're actually not in an inventory or skills tab, but some sort of special "I pressed down on the Right Joystick to "Quick Assign" a Skill" tab... Listed in that dialogue are skills that you can currently assign to the selected button.

(Note: You use Net's just like you use any skill, by assigning that skill to a button or a button+trigger combo However, before the desired Net can be available for you to chose as a "Skill" in order to assign it to a button, it must first be "Equipped." This is something like a gem skill, which won't be available if not in a socket. But, instead of socketing, you open up your inventory and click on the desired net. That will "equip it" and then you can assign it to a button. When you target a mob that can be captured, you can then use the Net like any skill, since it's assigned to a button, just like all active skills.)

First, you have to make sure that your desired net is "equipped" or it won't show up in the list of "skills" you can assign when you press down on the right joystick.

So, go into your inventory, before doing anything else, and then click on the desired stack of Nets. It'll ask you if you wish to equip them. Of course, you do. There will be no visible indicator that you have them equipped at this time, though.

Then, push down on the Right Joystick, which will... embiggen the display pane. :) Use the joystick to navigate/highlight the skill slot you wish to put the "Throw Net/Capture" mechanic/skill on. You can use triggers at this point to cycle to your alt-button commands.

Then, press "A" and you'll get a selection of skills you can scroll through using the joystick. The Net icon should appear there. If it does not, then it didn't get properly equipped or you're not in a zone where Nets are allowed.

(I have no idea why they don't allow you to equip nets in Town, Hideout or the courtyard of the Lab... Maybe the way that they work on certain mob classes or something, dunno.)

IF that is the case, then you need to be sure that you equip them when you're in a zone which allows you to use them. ie: Get to a zone where there are hostile mobs, then equip them there, first. I have no idea why there's no dialogue popup that explains this to players. Something as simple as "you can't equip that here" would suffice.

The ONLY way to know, once you've gone through this process, that your Net is equipped and ready is to look for its icon on the appropriate button indicator, but only ever when you are in a zone where you can actually use Nets! If they are properly equipped and ready to use, the icon may still be greyed out or even completely missing when you're in a zone where they can't be used...

This is one of the problems as it appears the game will sometimes indicate what "used to be" assigned to that slot or "nothing at all" assigned to that slot when you're in a zone where no skills can be used. But, magically, when you enter a zone where those skills can be used, the icon for the assigned Net will appear appropriately on the assigned button as indicated. /weird

Just be sure that if you don't see the Net icon when you go to equip it using the "press down on the Right Joystick" method that you go to a zone where it's possible for you to use Nets, like any map that can have hostile mobs on it. (NOT Hideout, Town or Lab courtyard) The only way you can equip a Net, to begin with, is if you're in one of those zones and that would be the only reason I can think of that a Net icon isn't present in the dialogue choice if you push down on the joystick.

Note: It's still screwy, from time to time, for me, even when I do all of the above. I'll often have to back out of the dialogue when I don't see the Net icon available, just to have to equip it "again" and then start the dialogue over. I don't know why. But, I do use the same slot to set up my Auras and Curses and such, since I run several at a time, and I have to cycle that slot at least three times in order to get all my buffs up and then equip a Net. So, I could be introducing some things that the Net mechanic doesn't like to play well with. /shrug

I've been playing this game for months now and never realized you could bind skills by pushing down on the right stick. I had been doing it from the skill menu. ...needless to say, I struggled for a long time with the net until I realized this. Was about to give up.
Just a comment on the whole "Net" function - It sucks. It's so darn frustrating. With the cooldown on Nets and mobs with the "Extra Health" affix, which doesn't actually "add" to their hitpoints, just acts like some crazy "heal" when they hit zero, it's just too darn difficult to actually capture some Beasts. Fight a "Red" Beast forever and then... Grats, you one-shot it before you could get the next Net out...

I won't like seeing the Bestiary Recipes for Flasks and Uniques go, but as far as the general mechanics behind Beasts and "hunting" (lol?) and "capturing" them? Good riddance.
