[3.2] Zoe (A Shock Nova & Ball Lightning Poet's Pen Elementalist with 2 curses) (Big update on 26/03

The double curse version is now the main version of the build. If you have been playing the classic version please refer to the full change log of 26/03 in my Change Log section in the 2nd post on the first page or go to page 3 of the thread where you can find my update post.

Hi guys, this is my guide to Zoe, a lightning spell character that attempts to get the most out of Elementalist and dual wielding Poet's Pens. Named after Eleanor Zoe Bishop from Heroes, Zoe wrecks havoc all over Wraeclast with her expert lightning skills. If you're looking for a lightning build with a smooth and flashy playstyle then it might be worth trying this out.

1. Introduction
Spoiler
This is a Shock Nova and Ball Lightning character utilizing 2 Poet's Pens. I chose Shock Nova for map clear and coupled that with Ball Lightning for extra single target dps. We also have 2 curse slots and several curse choices to accommodate different playstyles.

The new Elementalist is perfect for it: the Pendulum of Destruction ascendancy node swaps between a damage buff and a massive AoE buff, from which both Shock Nova and Ball Lightning benefit greatly. Mastermind of Discord gives us a lot of penetration and Paragon of Calamity provides us with elemental reflect immunity and some much needed life leech.

2. Pros & Cons
Spoiler
Pros:
- Fast map clear
- Decent single target
- Smooth and flashy playstyle
- No need to 5/6 link anything
- 2 flexible curse choices for more offense or defense
Cons
- Needs a few mandatory uniques and therefore is a bit tricky to pull off as a league starter build
- Minimum cost of mandatory items is around 40c to get the build rolling (Poet's Pens are around 20c each) Price updated on 26/03
- Hexproof and + monster elemental resistance map mods lower our dps quite a bit, having both of those on the map will make boss fights rather long

3.Videos
Spoiler

With Inpulsa's Broken Heart

T12 Racecourse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53Sgab9JdTs
T13 unidentified Desert Springs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuzIGXrwqPA

Yes i'm aware that the Desert Springs boss fight takes a month and is probably not viewer friendly, but that is precisely why i chose this particular map to show in my guide. Racecourse is fun, fast and looks pretty but the bosses are extremely straight forward because they don't have any special mechanics or phases so i decided to upload a video of a boss that has as many delays as possible in order to showcase the build in as many different situations as possible.

4. Levelling

Spoiler
Levelling gear includes: 2 Lifesprig wands for the first 12 levels, Lochtonial Caress gloves, Asenath's Mark helmet, Wanderlust boots.

I started off levelling with Freezing Pulse - Onslaught. At level 8 i also put in Added Cold. At level 18 i equipped my Poet's Pens and swapped to a Volatile Dead setup: Volatile Dead - Controlled Destruction - Elemental Focus in one Poet's Pen, Unearth - Lesser Multiple Projectiles - Bodyswap in another, plus Frenzy - Faster Attacks - Lesser Multiple Projectiles somewhere in the gear to trigger our spells.

Level 28 is where the real fun begins. Then we get to start using Shock Nova and Ball Lightning. See the gem setup section for how to proceed from here.

5. Gems
Spoiler

Poet's Pen gem setup #1: Shock Nova - Added Lightning - Controlled Destruction
Poet's Pen gem setup #2: Ball Lightning - Elemental Focus - Controlled Destruction (swap Cont. Destruction for Slower Projectiles at level 31)

As mentioned earlier, we need an attack skill to trigger our spells and i have chosen Frenzy. Our setup: Frenzy -Faster Attacks - Lesser Multiple Projectiles (swap this for Greater Multiple Projectiles at level 38) Later on we'll add Curse on Hit - Your curse of choice to our Frenzy setup.

Movement skill setup: Lightning Warp - Less Duration - Faster Casting - Swift Affliction

We also use Herald of Thunder and Herald of Ice, since they give us a nice damage boost and synergize extremely well with Elementalist and our skills.

First curse setup: Blasphemy - curse setup. There are several options here for curses, such as Temporal Chains, Elemental Weakness or Enfeeble.

Second curse setup: Frenzy - Greater Multiple Projectiles - Curse on Hit - Your curse of choice. If you can afford to spend a little extra i strongly recommend you get gloves with the mod "Socketed Gems are Supported by Level # Faster Attacks" and put your Frenzy setup in those.

Cast When Damage Taken - Immortal Call - Increased Duration - Summon Lightning Golem/Summon Stone Golem
Keep Cast When Damage Taken gem at level 4 and make sure you don't level Immortal Call and Summon Lightning Golem too much, otherwise CWDT won't proc them.

Other gems we use:
- Decoy Totem

6. Passive Tree

Spoiler
Passive tree:
32 points: poeurl.com/bPfH
58 points: poeurl.com/bPfN
88 points: poeurl.com/bPmC

Finished tree at 104 points: poeurl.com/bQ1R

Full tree at 121 points: poeurl.com/bQ1T

Ascendancy order: Pendulum of Destruction --> Mastermind of Discord --> Paragon of Calamity --> Liege of the Primordial

When to get the jewel nodes is completely up to you, i prefer to get most of the good passive nodes first but if you have some great jewels then it's perfectly okay to get jewel nodes early.

7. Bandits
Spoiler
For bandits we just kill all. Gives us more freedom in the passive tree and the other options aren't as useful for us.

8. Uniques used
Spoiler
Our mandatory uniques i mentioned earlier. My absolute favorite item in the game. The build does not work without them.

Gives us a really nice damage boost. Additionally, since it converts some of the lightning damage to cold damage, we get even more penetration from the Mastermind of Discord ascendancy node.

The budget choice. Gives us life, all res, more AoE and a bunch of damage.

A bit more expensive choice for a body armour. Make sure you get one with a high roll of "% increased damage if you have shocked an enemy recently", at least 45%.

9. Rare Gear & Jewels
Spoiler

Just some gear with life and resists will work great, don't forget that we need some dexterity as well. Once you can afford better gear try to get some spell damage and/or lightning damage on your jewellery. Extra attack speed on your gloves is also nice. For boots, try to get at least 20% Movement Speed on them.

As for the jewels, try to get % maximum life and spell damage/lightning damage.

High end gear:

Helmet with % increased Ball Lightning damage for more single target dps

As mentioned in the Gems section, gloves with Faster Attacks and our Frenzy - Curse on Hit - Elemental Weakness setup in them

An abyss jewel with + maximum life, Onslaught on kill and phasing on kill is super nice if you can afford it.

10. Flasks
Spoiler

Basic flask setup:

Make sure you have freeze, bleed and curse removal on your flasks. I use one Quicksilver flask, Wise Oak, a Basalt/Granite flask and 2 life flasks. Wise Oak gives us even more penetration and fits our build perfectly, especially if you can get your lightning and cold resistances to be exactly the same values.

I am trying something kind of similar but I plan to use Arc in main hand and Glacial Cascade (with phy to lightning) in second hand (GC is very good single target skill and hits much faster than Ball Lightning). Arc was chosen because of its good shock chance and shock effectiveness and longer range than Shock Nova.
Also I am not going golems as their bonuses are not that good but Beacon of Ruin for guaranteed shock and chill. I am scaling shock effectiveness with it so I can hit 50% bonus damage from shocking enemies fairly easily. 50% more damage beats any kind of bonus +1 golem can give.

Also Berek's ring will be used for life leech (it gives 1% life leech vs shocked enemies) and Mind of the Council helm for mana "leech". It is a MoM build. With high shock chance and many attacks and spells per second I can expect up to 30% of max mana gained per second vs single target or much more vs bigger packs.

Cool stuff mate, best of luck with your build! Your build sounds rather cool and i would be very interested in updates on how your build is going! :3
14/03
- Added T12 Racecourse with Elder influence video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2Iug42yNe4
- Added a tankier option for a full tree.
- Added Increased Duration support gem to our Cast When Damage Taken setup.

Sadly haven't been able to properly test the double curse version yet, if you're more interested in that version then a realistic time for an update is probably next week or so.

If you've been trying this build out in the past few days then please take a look at the change log, i have made some minor adjustments.

I have also started to plan out a Cold damage type version of the build utilizing a cold AoE skill for pack clear and a Cold single target skill for boss fights. I've never done an Ice Nova build before so currently leaning towards that as one of the skills. ETA on that version is unknown though, gotta test the double curse version first. Might get around to the Cold version in late March/early April, but no promises.
