How do you pick your class/ascendancy each league?
Just curious... I see some interesting responses to these ascendancy reveals. Like "xyz doesn't play exactly like I'm used to so I'm skipping this league". So when picking a class for a new league, do you go for:
- The same class ryde or die 4lyfe? - Whatever is most OP? - Efficient league starter? - Whatever has interesting (not necessarily strongest) changes? - Attempt at hipster builds? I personally go with what I think might have the most interesting builds to test/theorycraft. Last bumped on Feb 27, 2018, 3:41:05 PM

I run one of each class to about level 70 and then take the one i have the most fun with to 90.

" 1. What I want to play, because I think it'll be fun. 2. See 1. In my case the downtime between leagues, or the couple weeks at the end, are often where I play around with the "testing" builds, so I have a fair idea what I'm going to take in on day one. This league is a bit different, but so far none of the ascendency changes have substantially changed my expected starters. |

I read the patch nodes, ponder over the skill tree and fiddle around until inspiration hits me.

1st character - Roll an 8 sided die, rerolling 8. Count left to right at character creation screen. Get to normal lab, stand in front of altar, try to figure out which ascendancy goes with the junk I have been leveling.
Subsequent characters - Pick something horrible and beat it until it works. |

I think of some interesting mechanical interaction, something that would make me do more than just spam right-click forever. (Desecrate to spawn corpses - Orb of Storms to proc Mastermind of Discord and Elemental Overload - Volatile Dead to kill stuff).
Or I just think of some skill or combination of skills that would be cool. (Hey I feel like playing Bladefall Totems for no good reason.) Or pick some cool new thing released at the time. (Like the Oni-Goroshi sword.) Figure out which other mechanics support the style I'm going for (for example Soul Mantle with Self-Flagellation for totems). Think of good ways to scale the damage output. Which defenses to use. Then figure out which ascendancy class goes well together with what I have so far. Sometimes the ascendancy has required mechanics for the idea to work in the first place. Sometimes the choice is pretty obvious. Sometimes there are multiple candidates, and I go as far as planning out several different builds in PoB down to the final skill tree and signature gear to see which one is better. After selecting ascendancy, next comes the skill tree and gear choices, which I again do in PoB before starting the character. (At least the major unique pieces of gear. I don't futz around with 20% resist mods on rares or anything like that.) Ultimately it all comes back to the simple idea: figure out something cool. Try to find a way to make that cool thing work as well as I can. Ascendancy class is just one in a series of choices to that end. |
