I really want to enjoy this game but I can't

Hello,

I tried several times to get into PoE but I just can't seem to enjoy the game. Everything sounds great on paper but in game it's just... meh.

First of, the huge talent tree, it sounds so cool at first, but then you realize, the vast majority of those talents are just +10 stat or +5% life or something like that, it's really not that exciting.

The fact that skills comes from gems sounds also great, but actually for a new player it's just annoying to find a new nice item only to realize you don't wanna use it because it doesnt have the correct gems.

Performance and graphics are such a disappointment. Graphics are average at best, and you need a high end computer otherwise you'll get a lot of framedrops. Characters are ugly, leveling a Witch feels like playing an half naked hobo looking for food, there's no particular world atmosphere, overall the whole thing feels like "meh".

Leveling is not particularly fun, since to be able to carry your build into the endgame you need to focus on 1 or 2 skills with support gems, so you just spam those skills over and over, and it would be okay if the gameplay felt super smooth, but it doesn't, it feels clunky. Add to that the fact that you can't change talents except for a few respecced points here and there, so if you want to try something new you gotta level it up again. Feels too much like a chore.

Overall the game feels clunky, laggy, nothing stand out of the ordinary. I leveled and deleted about 5 or 6 characters since years ago when I first heared of this game, and I could never reach the end game because I would just get super bored and quit before.

What am I missing here ? What is it about this game that is so great ? I just can't get into it.

what is so great? In my opinion the complexity of mechanics and endless possibilities of character customization.

well there is a million games out there and you can play whatever you like. There is no reason to play a game you dont enjoy.

PS: this thread should be moved to feedback section

Even if you get to enjoy it and find something powerful and a great build eventually it will be nerfed to the f****** ground, even mid league, so yeah, is dissapointing in general.

I am really confused by such posts. You tried so hard to get into the game...why exactly? If you don't like it, just play something else. There are a million different games you can play, no reason to waste your time with something you don't enjoy.
I love this game.
BECAUSE it's so hard and complex.

1. There are many great skills in the tree. I'm a marauder. the endless questions of "should i take resolute technique?" "should i take the nerfed vaal pact?"
many options, no right and wrongs, just trial and error for your build. love it.

2. what do u mean? if u find a great item with different socket colors, just use chroms to change the color!

3. i love the graphics. it's a bit different than one of the great rivals, Grim Dawn, but i love it, especially with my GTX 1050. it's a matter of taste anyway.

4. boredom is in the eye of the beholder. It took my at least (!) three months to level from 89 to 90.
why? instead of doing what people on the forum claim they do, play 250 strands maps,
i try harder and different things. if i roll a hard map, i wouldn't leave it in the middle, but die 6 times just because its more interesting for me.

5. the game is too hard. i agree. on level 90, almost 7k HP, i can't kill the minotaur. don't u like challenges? are you one of those who use cheats on games?
Just because others enjoy it dosn't mean you will.

Go find something else you enjoy.

This game is Diablo 2 reborn only with more content, actual endgame, a lot more character dept and optimization.

For you to like it you first have to enjoy the repetitive grind style of action slash RPG games. If it's not fun to run the same 1/3/5/9 maps over and over again while finding items that are mostly thrash and looking for those that you can sell for profit then you will not like the game. Not this, not Diablo 2, not Diablo 3,...

Sure the skill tree can be overwhelming and yes it is composed of travel nodes (+10 to str/dex/int) if you want to reach other nodes in the tree you have to take those. There are defensive nodes (% inc. life, armour, evasion, resistance,....) and there are damage nodes (physical melee damage, elemental damage, crit chance,....). Then there are a keynodes witch are really fun. They give and take from your character. CI is a node that will make you immune to chaos damage but at the same time your max life is 1. Resolute will make you never miss but you can never crit.

Yes in most ARPGs you will use 1-2 damaging skills if you know what you are doing. But PoE takes it levels beyond cause of the support gems. Like shooting fire arrow? Why not shoot 5? Why not make all 5 chain to other enemies?

Support gems make you build your skill the way you like for the purpose you want it.

I find the graphics great, i like there is always a meta but it's a lot more blured in the background. In D3 if you are not playing the build everyone else is you are just "dumb and inefficient." Here if you are not playing the meta means you like something more, or it better suits your playstyle or is a faster and stronger char than the meta ones because you invested into gear. If you are doing content you want with a build you enjoy you are playing the game right.
Spamming a single skill is something you get used to, but it's also changing a bit with shaped items enabling more 6links (though so far I have yet to theorise a build with those that wouldn't just use the 6L additional as support, such as quad CoH or CoH with utility; then again getting proper shaped / elder items is so rare, that I haven't even bothered updating my original target build for abyss).

You can do some shenanigans like a bow build with two 6L dealing two different kinds of elemntal damage and alternating for EE. Then again you'll most likely be better with a clear and a single target setup.

Admittedly there is less variation and utility than in other arpgs I've played, but none of those were grind heavy long term ones. If you're here for the long run, it shouldn't bother you too much.
