Start new Harbinger-SSF witch, talk to first ! exile, nothing happens

I'm puzzled; I created a new witch character (SpoopyCheeze) in SSF Harbringer league, hit the "skip all tutorials" button, grabbed the wand, then talked to the ! dying exile. Nothing happened. I did it a few more times, and it's just stuck there.

next action: delete the character, create a new one, try again. (it's reproducible following that exact order of actions.)

Ah! Figured it out. I was trying out an unarmed build, so I turned off "auto-equip" in the options. Turns out that the required action to progress is to *wield* the weapon, not just have it in your inventory.

That's not the most intuitive thing, but I guess not a bug so much as a ... unhelpful feature, maybe?
