Projectiles pierce 2 additional targets? (no pierce)

If I use a skill that DOES NOT pierce, does taking "Projectiles pierce 2 additional targets" node makes that skill pierce, or I need to use a Pierce support gem?

The Pierce support just adds the exact same modifier :P It's the same thing.
(well, and Damage because they still wanted Pierce to lord over all other options)
Ok, so getting that node means my projectiles will now pierce 2 targets (max). Good to know, thank you.

I get why Chain has a damage penalty - it can, in certain circumstances, let a skill hit your main target twice, and it'a also got better coverage than the other options due to being targeted. GGG consistently says "Pierce is the weakest of the three projectile modifiers!", and of and by themselves I can see the argument for that, though I disagree.

What I don't get is why Fork is so consistently Shatner'd on. Fork cannot possibly hit a target more than once, it doesn't provide extra coverage Pierce can't, and yet it's still hit with a fat "Less" penalty. Pierce doesn't even just get an Increased modifier like Faster Projectiles does, they made it a More for reasons I just cannot figure out.

At the very least, let poor Fork be neutral, or even let it go from 'Less' to 'More' as it levels, so you're rewarded for investing in it. Piercing is already a more desirable behavior than Forking most of the time, as it's more aimable and combines better with additional projectiles. Nobody would play Forking Barrage even if the Fork gem was objectively better/more damage than Pierce was.

Both chain and fork are pretty horribad right now. If chain is strong enough to beat our pierce then your dps is already way past the threshold where it would even matter which of the 2 gems you chose.

Not always true. Chain is amazing with Ice Shot, since it has those explosions. Even with mediocre Ice Shot damage, having it chain greatly increases your clear.
Combat is simple.
Keep your blood in.
Take theirs out.
Chain/fork are just in a state of being outdated compared to the huge number of more multipliers we now have available.

Chain can increase your clear speed it generally only does on builds where you do so much damage to trash that you are just dropping overkill for auto targeting.

Fork should have a damage bonus or no penalty at 20, its really bad there is no point in forking projectiles now. Maybe if it forked repeatedly so it was a harder to use lmp/gmp with no damage penalty it could be viable.
