Probably because you are trying to remove nodes that would disconnect part of your tree.

why would the be there, then, if not to be used?

You can use them. But you can't have points on your tree that have no connection to your starting point. If that's what you are trying to do. It's unclear without screenshots or unhiding your characters and stating which nodes you are trying to refund.

figured it out. click on those you wanna change, then refund and move, or something like that
