Anyone care to guide a new player?

Thousands of hours spent on other aRPGs. I'm recognizing that POE seems a bit more indepth than most others.

I'm wanting to play a Templar, can anyone suggest a build to aim for and some loose information about starting out and reaching said build?

Any general advice is welcome and appreciated. Also I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.

This is a fairly decent build, and pretty fun.
You can check out my character 'stand_behind_braum', if you want to see how my current character is progressing.

In a party of 2, my friend has stopped killing any mob that isn't rare or harder, because my totems just clear everything before he has a chance to attack. xP

My gear is basically trash tier blues and yellows, and it's still insanely strong and safe to play.

This was basically the exact same build I was going to start making from scratch, but someone had already made a working build. xP

Oh well.
