Can't chat not sure why

I have an issue where nobody sees what I type, but I can see what everyone else types. This includes trade chat, global chat, and even whispers. I have checked to see if the chats were enabled and restarted both the game and my computer several times. Recently noticed the issue when my friend could not see what I was typing, but I could see what he was typing. I suspect the issue has been going on for at least one or two days now since nothing I typed has been responded to in that time period.
EDIT: Just tried whispering myself and I get nothing, but if I switch to another character and whisper myself it works as intended.
