Bacon is pig meat (pork). It is not composed of pork offal. Pork is anathema to the Muslim population of the Indian subcontinent so you are unlikely to see it frequently. Beef is not consumed by the Hindu population, and we do not eat it here in Australia for similar reasons although beef is by far the most popular and cheap meat.

Pork may be a real problem in that it can be infected with parasites. Poorly cooked pork can have a MAJOR impact on your health. An entire German batallion was put out of action in WW2 by trichinosis caused by eating poorly cooked pork

Goat, which tastes better than lamb, is usually expensive and hard to find. We standardise on lamb, chicken and seafood.

Pandri is the Tamil work for pig and it is 'Babi' in Malay. I would probably guess therefore that you are perhaps from Tamil Nadu.

yup.
The fact that pork is anathema for Muslims and beef is simply not touched by Hindus altogether is quite outdated though, but it's still uncommon.

Also, a Japanese friend of mine says pig in Japanese is buta. Wow.

Guess that's me. Outdated. I do like to see the old traditions kept alive though.

Any way, nice to meet you sort of unofficially.

What is Bacon, exactly? I'm Indian, I've only eaten the stuff once ever, and it looked like grey floppy meat-rinds at the buffet in a high class hotel. Tasted bad too. I've heard crazy things about it.

I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be grey, and bacon tastes the best when fried at home. I'm going to assume that since it was a high class hotel, they probably over-exaggerated the bacon, adding unnecessary stuff which made it taste different.

candied bacon with maple syrup is the food of the gods.

for the record, I come from India, and my family is one of the few with no problems eating pork. Except my mom, who's a bit of a traditionalist.

Of course, this only applies IF I can get hold of bacon, and it ain't happening here unless I visit my uncle and aunt in the USA again after my internship is finished.

Had some bacon today, was great but it cost a fortune to buy... Why can't we have good things in Chennai?
Meh, Bacon in my country is rarely used as part of breakfast. Actually its most used as a seasoning.
Mmmm bacon
I hear they make hats out of bacon somewhere
My coworker cooked pancake batter cupcakes, with french toast tasting icing on top, sprinkled with bacon...

They were amazing!
