Question about Devoto's Devotion, 10% Reduced Physical Damage

Question about Devoto's Devotion (Unique Nightmare Bascinet) regarding the "10% Reduced Physical Damage". Is this for incoming or outgoing damage? (i.e. Is the physical damage I'm dealing being reduced, or is the physical damage I'm receiving reduced).

The text isn't clear and there is no additional info in Gamepedia. My guess is that it's reducing outgoing physical damage (the character is doing less physical damage). The reason why I think that is that when I check the stats on the Defense tab, the line for "Estimated Physical Damage Reduction" isn't effected. (I went from 68% -> 69%, but was expecting 79%). Also, similar language found on other items (i.e. Hrimnor's Resolve - increased XX% Fire Damage) seems to apply to outgoing damage.

It would be helpful if item descriptions used language like "...damage done" / "...damage received".

If there's an official answer, how can we update Gamepedia with the clarification?

its outgoing damage, it reduces the damage you do.
Wut? I always thought damage reduction applied to incoming damage. I guess it would need "You take" as part of its description to apply to incoming damage.

That would make Devoto's so incredibly overpowered, jeez.

Damage Taken modifiers apply to incoming Damage: Fortify, the Juggernaut's Unrelenting passive, for example. They are all internally consistent in that way.

Yep. I get it... but made the same mistake at the OP. "You take" or "damage taken" is the clue you need to look for.

Still... the 10% reduction is countered by the gain to attack speed. Not much of a downside.

Yeah, the downside is all but non-existant. The additive nature alone makes it fractional at best, and Attack Speed is so much more valuable. What a fantastic helmet.
The item description should clearly indicate the affected object.

At the very least, Gamepedia should have this info. I'd update it if I knew how.

The game already distinguishes between Damage dealt and Damage Taken, namely by the keyword 'Taken' or absence thereof. Gamepedia doesn't explain a second time because the in-game description is (internally) unambiguous.

People ~never get 'Increased Damage' modifiers wrong; universally understood to be outgoing. 'Reduced Damage' modifies the exact same value ('Damage'), but with a negative value instead (hence, Reduced). With how very, very rarely this comes up, it would seem a large portion of the playerbase understands how the modifier works intuitively.
(and if not, it's pretty easy to see from the tooltip..)

As for editing the wiki: make an account, log in, and press the edit button on the item's page. It's a standard text-editor from then on.

The big downside, as with many strong unique items associated with life builds, is a lack of life.

The problem is players are used to seeing "% increased/reduced Physical Damage" on their weapons. It inherently gave players the impression that "% increased/reduced Physical Damage" was associated with the Item/Equipment with said stats. So when it comes to a hat, many players were more than 100% sure it grants defensive bonus.

The item description should clearly indicate the affected object.
Agreed. They should fix this.
