Animate Guardian loses items on gem swap, log out, and removal

Hello
Been trying a summoner build this league and recently started playing with some AG support setups. Noticed the items are removed upon logout or gem swap, which wasn't the case before. Is this a bug or has the gem mechanics been changed?
