Wicked Ward + Vile Bastion?
I doubt this works how I'd like, but I'll ask anyway.
After doing the math on Vile Bastion, I'm actually kind of underwhelmed. And in practice it's been pretty meh, too. However... I don't suppose that when I'm regenerating ES through Vile Bastion, it lets my natural ES Recharge timer start kicking in despite taking damage? i.e. I'm taking damage, I'm taking damage, Ok now I killed a guy. Now I have 4 seconds of recharge, which as per Wicked Ward's "Energy Shield Recharge is not interrupted by Damage if Recharge began Recently," recharge DID begin recently, so maybe now it will let my natural recharge kick in despite taking damage?? I 99% doubt this, because I assume capitalized "Recharge" means the natural recharge state of ES, which has not started yet in this situation. In which case, I'm probably just gonna spend 10 refunds and drop Vile Bastion. It just seems very lacking. Last bumped on Jan 10, 2017, 6:52:59 AM

Regeneration is not recharge. Vile Bastion gives regeneration, so it doesn't interact with Wicked Ward like that.
Still, Vile Bastion can give quite significant regeneration when lots of enemies are around. |

I dunno. I think I'm gonna kill it.
Let's assume 10k ES. 0.5% regenerated over 4 seconds, total of 2% per enemy. Ten enemies and that's 20% regenerated. Every 10 enemies I kill, I regenerate 2k ES. On average, I figure I'll be anywhere between 2k-4k ES being regenerated over 4 seconds. And when you really look at it, that's kind of nothing in this game. PoE is never about the battle of attrition, it's always about taking big ass hits that you either do or do not survive. And if you do, you need that shit restored instantly, or you need to not be there anymore. I don't honestly imagine Vile Bastion would ever save my life. I dunno. While also underwhelming, I might just grab the +1 curse. Occultist's best skill seems to be Wicked Ward. Which, honestly, fits the playstyle of my build a million percent, so I don't regret going Occultist for it. But outside of that, I have to wonder what Ele would have done for me (though I was consciously trying not to make her an Ele). |

The extra curse is pretty cool too. My flameblast occultist leaves out Void Beacon (because no chaos damage and who cares about enemy regen) and Forbidden Power (because not a crit build). She has Whispers of Doom too, for a total of three curses.

I haven't considered going 3 Curses. I did pick me up a Heretic's, so I could do it. I was just assuming I'd go double curse + Enlighten + Inc AoE (Vortex build, I wanna make sure everything Vortex hits, the curses do too). But hey, maybe it's something I could do.
Though that would mean no Discipline... So, dunno. But I am a crit build, so yeah. Crit + Pyre, that way one Vortex should be all I need per pack :P |

Do note that crit does nothing for the DoT part of Vortex.

Sorry, some context: I'm Pyre'ing it up.

Yes, I saw you mention pyre. I don't see what it has to do with crit though. About 75% of Vortex's base damage comes from the DoT (over three seconds), but unlike ignite, that damage does not depend on the magnitude of the initial hit. Since crit only affects the initial hit, it just seems an inefficient combination to me. Or is there some mechanic I missed?

With this combo, you want as much "faster start of ES recharge" as you can get (on jewels, the tree, Soul Strike, etc.). That way your recharge starts almost instantly as soon as you stop taking damage. It is AMAZINGLY powerful if used correctly.
U MAD?

I had done calculations on Vortex's DoT when I initially planned to do the build. Every time I pulled out every possible increment to the default Vortex DoT, it just came up severely lackluster.
Turning it into pure fire (originally, Cold to Fire Support was suggested to me) seems to solve this. I get to remain a DoT build, which just so happens to also pack a big initial hit. Vortex's "spell damage applies to this spell's damage over time" makes it so that spell damage increases the Ignite's damage formula. So I turned my build into a crit build that loads up on spell damage (or cold/fire hybrid damage, such as "Snowforged" in the skill tree). Now, the damage appears to very much be there, as opposed to when I tried to actually buff Vortex's default DoT portion. |
