How long can my account be inactive?

Are accounts deleted for prolonged inactivity? Looks like PoE will go into hypersleep for me, indefinitely. I don't know for how long but it's possible I'd like to play again someday. Should I bother to log-in every six months/one year or that's not needed?

Accounts don't get removed, but character names become free for all in an year, if not wrong.

No what happens is your character name is freed up and you will need to select a new one upon logging back in that character. You'll see your char name in red and will prompt you to type a new name in.
You don't lose the char like D2 did if it expired. No need to perm. † You were a good man in a bad situation, Fairgraves. †
