Guide: Making the game run smoother

I have a high end system and am lag free 95% of the time, but large groups when certain spells are being spammed my FPS would drop quite a bit still. I managed to fix it and am currently getting no lag at all in full Map parties. I have an nVidia GTX 590, and this has worked well for clan members of mine with nVidia cards as well. I'm sure AMD users can do something similar in the Catalyst Control Center but you guys would have to figure that out for yourselves.

Step 1) Turn off V-Sync in Path of Exile.

Path of Exile's vertical sync doesn't have triple buffering as an option, so if your FPS drops below 60 it'll spike down to 30.

Step 2) In nVidia Control Panel, under Manage 3D Settings, change Vertical Sync to "Adaptive" and change Triple Buffering to "On".

And that's it, these changes alone made my FPS so much more stable while grouping. It's worked for a number of nVidia users that I play with, so I thought I'd share it here on the off chance it could help even a few.
Adaptive v-sync is a blessing from the gods!

Also turning off shadows will make a HUGE improvement.

Yeah shadows off really does help. It looks a bit weird at first, but you quickly get used to it and only really looks bad in town. In actual zones it doesn't look bad at all. And it's worth it considering you get a stable 60 FPS in a full party.
I usually turn of shadows in practically every game i play. you dont often notice the absence and it almost always makes a huge difference to performance.
i dont have that adaptive option, just force off and force on?? What to do xD

Do you have an nVidia card? Are your drivers up to date? I know people with some pretty old cards and they had the option. If you have the triple buffering option, try forcing it on with triple buffering on. Just remember to turn off V-sync in the actual game.
I have Nvidia 8600 GT but its not fully updated cause when i do it my entire FPS for PC drop low that i cant play even some simple game that does not require graphic card atall as League of Legends.

Your computer is broken, dude.

Good advice but i would say be careful.

The traditional problem with triple buffering has been input lag.

If your system is caching frames, ie temporarily storing choppy frames before displaying them back to you smoothly - then this comes at the cost of input lag - you are seeing things delayed on screen after your actions happen.

It's similar to playing a console game on a modern tv when the tv is in 'double htz' or non game mode.

This can be very noticeable on some games and barely noticeable on others. It depends on the game.

I have no idea how it affects PoE, if at all.

Enought to make a difference?

Enough to kill your HC char?

I don't know.

But personally I wouldn't take the risk with my HC char.

Edit: I have no idea if nVidias new adaptive v sync fixes this problem.

Shadows, definitely turn them off. The start of Act2 in the jungle/forest was a nightmare of an FPS drop when I got there with shadows on.
