[2.4] Hierophant Shockwave Totems

So far, I'm loving this build, courtesy of wabachaw. I don't want to take credit for this build being my own. This is just my take on it, and my set up, as well as a more complete guide.

With the Hierophant Ascendancy, we basically get free skills, when we are at full Energy Shield. Being that manually avoiding damage is the main playstyle of the build, we are pretty always at full Energy Shield. Therefor, Shockwave Totem and Orb of Storms are usually free to cast. Otherwise, they are still 50% off.

The following list is a pros and cons.

Pros and Cons
Pros:

- Safe
- Tanky
- Good DPS
- Shatters
- Can map on a four link
- Easy Lab
- Easy to get Resists
- Easy to break 8,000 Energy Shield
- Does well with junk gears

Cons:

- You have to stop to place totems

Next, I will break down the skill tree a little bit, including how I will and have leveled, as well as his proposed end game tree.

Passive Skill Tree
Ancestral Bond - Getting Ancestral Bond and some life and damage.
Life and Damage – Filling out some more life and damage.
Life and Crit - Grabbing more life and crit chance.
Aura Effect and Crit - Grabbing some more crit chance, and aura effect.
End game - More Energy Shield and Power Charges.

Current Tree - Level 83

The end game tree should be about level 75. This is when you should be able to go low life. From here, you can fill out some more Energy Shield, grab some jewel slots, or anything else you see fit.

Ascendancy will be Hierophant, as previously stated. The Hierophant passives will be as follows:

Hierophant Passives
Divine Guidance: This is the pathway to the main passive, that I will talk about after this. Divine Guidance also has good benefits. It gives you a bit of Mind Over Matter with taking 10% of damage from mana instead of life. It also gives +150 to maximum mana. This bit of maximum mana “double dips” with the next Ascendancy passive.

Sanctuary of Thought: This is our bread and butter passive. This is how we get free and 50% off skills. Sanctuary of Thought gives 50% reduced mana cost of skills, and another 50% when at maximum Energy Shield. This passive also gives us 25% of maximum mana as extra maximum Energy Shield. This is the “double dipping” that I mentioned in the previous passive. The extra mana given in Divin Guidance also equates to extra Energy Shield.

Conviction of Power: This passive is used to help maintain Power and Endurance Charges. It gives 15% chance to grant a Power Charge when a totem kills an enemy and 25% chance to grant an Endurance Charge when you gain a Power Charge. There is enough killing, aside from boss fights, that you should be able to maintain all of your Power and Endurance Charges with this passive.

Pursuit of Faith: If you do Uber Lab, this passive increases damage of your totems. It gives 8% cast speed while you have a totem and 4% increased damage per enemy killed by your totems recently.

Kill all bandits in all difficulties. All of the “benefits” of the bandit rewards are negligible for this build. You will get a lot more out of passive skill points.

This is the skill set up that I chose. Wabachaw suggests using Empower and Poison on Shockwave Totem. Empower takes way too long to level in order to be effective. Poison? It seems like you'd get more out of the 40%+ increased fire damage of Added Fire Damage. Plus crits will cause burning, so there's your degen.

Skill Gems
Shockwave Totem – Increased Critical Strikes, Faster Casting, Increased Area of Effect, Increased Critical Damage, Added Fire Damage

Purity of Fire, Discipline and Hatred in shield.

Herald of Ash

Purity of Ice

Purity of Lightning

Cast When Damage Taken – Enfeeble

Orb of Storms - Power Charge on Critical

Lightning Warp – Reduced Duration

The only two uniques that are really required are Solaris Lorica, until you can afford Shavronne's Wrappings, and Prism Guardian for the Blood Magic'd Auras. These are not required until you transition into low life, around level 70-75.

Aside from that, max out your resists and get as much Energy Shield as you can. Also, spell damage would be beneficial.

My current gears are getting better, but the videos show how well this build does in trash gears.

My Current Gears

Here are some videos of the build in action. They kind of showcase progression of the build.

Trash Gears:

Normal Dried Lake
Merciless Dried Lake
Channel Map

Better Gears:

Burial Chambers Map

I will add more videos of more meaningful content as I get to it.

Hi,

How would you recommend levelling? First 30-50 levels or so?

I have started with Flame Totem - I put Added Fire Damage on it and nothing happened, btw, so are they gem links you have correct?

Working over to Ancestral Bond though concerned at the moment that my Flame Totem doesn't seem to do too much damage. Most of my DPS comes from other abilities currently.

Which gems should I take as I level? For example, I am now faced with a decision between Searing Bond and Firestorm; FS looks more helpful in the short-term but Searing Bond would work better after Ancestral Bond. Would be nice to know!

As you can tell I'm new to playing totems :)

Cheers,
A
I used Flame Totem with Added Lightning Damage until I got Shockwave Totem at level 28.

Added Fire Damage cannot do anything to Flame Totem because there is no physical damage for Added Fire to work off of. However, it is a strong link to Shockwave Totem.

After I got Shockwave Totem, I linked it with Faster Casting, Controlled Destruction, and Added Lightning Damage. You could easily use Added Fire Damage in place of Controlled Destruction or Added Lightning Damage, if you have the red slot.

I never touched Searing Bond or Firestorm. Though, both are solid options. That would come down to personal preference.

The links I showed in my initial post, are correct. Though, I'm currently running an Item Rarity set up. My Shockwave Totem is linked with Faster Casting, Increased Critical Strikes, and Item Rarity Support in some Wondertrap Boots.

Thanks for the reply. Just about to get SWT now.

Why did you link it to Controlled Destruction? Isn't part of this build based on spell crit damage?
There isn't a lot of crit at low levels, so the increased spell damage was quite helpful. Changed it out later.
