This theory might have been tongue-in-cheek, but I wouldn't bet against it. The insanity stacking might very well be the number of open instances you have in the instance manager. The more there, the more stacks of insanity you have.

No chance, it's an in game status effect of some kind. .
You mean like a status that gives you stacks of reduced IIQ?

A friend jokingly said that the game keeps track of the currency you use, and that the more currency you spend, the more likely you are to get good drops.

He wasn't serious though... but what if?!

This theory most definitely wrong. I have spent, in Prophecy league alone, about 10 thousand fusings, 30 exalts, probably 30 thousand alterations, hundreds of regals, chaos, scours and alchs. And the only drop of any worth whatsoever is a perfect taste of hate.
Maybe taking your gear to Kuduku to spend currency on it isn't so insane after all.

Well theres only one problem with your Theory Shags....

In patch 2.3 they FIXED frame time farming so it no longer works anymore anyway so theres no point in even doing it. Now the frame time never changes even if there is a master or vaal side area in the instance. Guess it was a side effect of the "Performance Improvements".
There is a fine line between Consideration and Hesitation.
The former is Wisdom, the latter is Fear.

But was it all in one login? Logging out could reset the counter. And trading away or using Masters wouldn't count, you'd have to use the Currency outright.

Face it, all of your suggestions are worse than this idea:

You get an insanity stack each time you get shocked by him.
I remembered vaguely seeing that debuff on me somewhere.

Can't remember what it was.

Something about Chaos/Degen or DoT related?

I'm not so sure.

I might be mistaken.
