The power of selling

I'm writing this for anyone who's always broke in a league. I'm playing in the two week Perandus HC race. I've been playing a ton of solo self found lately, and this seemed like a good opportunity to do it with that fresh new master experience. I love selling good gear I find, though, so I've also been doing that. I just throw any proceeds from my sales onto a separate tab to ignore until the race is over.

Here's what my broke ass would look like if I never sold anything (which is exactly what my broke ass really looks like):

Here's what I've made from selling so far:

Even though I'm doing really well on gear for a self found character, an extra 353 chaos and 94 fuses would be a huge boost to my gear level.

Do yourself a favor if rarely or never sell anything and want more wealth in temp leagues. Do some research to find out what gear is worth and sell things. Glance over general builds to find out what kind of items they use. Learn generally what affix tiers are good tiers and what affix combinations make an item great. Look up items similar to anything you find that seems decent on poe.trade to get an idea of whether or not they're valuable.

About my selling:

I am a super, super casual player when it comes to my playstyle. I've been picking up literally every rare that drops in most maps. Anything I think can sell for two chaos or more goes in a sell tab. Aside from a nearly perfect Abyssus I sold for 25 chaos, almost all my sales have been a mixture of rares I found, magic life + resist rings I found, jewels and jewelry I rolled, and flasks I rolled. I haven't been significantly more lucky or unlucky this league than usual.

You really don't need to pick up everything. I mainly do it because I'm SSF and that's the only way I get gear upgrades. I also constantly run out of alchs for maps, jewels, and jewelry and need to find gear that vendors for alch shards. If you aren't super casual or self found like me, get a loot filter that only shows top bases. You can definitely find lower bases that are worth a ton (I find a +3 bow most leagues), but most of what ends up being worth selling is a top base or a good unique.

Also, if you're playing solo self found like me and are only selling for kicks, don't forget to keep anything you might need in the future. I've sold gear that I should have instantly put on just because I was so hyped about finding something valuable. You'll feel pretty dumb when this happens. The helm I'm wearing right now was in my sale tab for a few hours before I finally wised up and put it on.

This is common sense no?
No. You may think so because you're used to it, but understanding the complexities of trading and amassing wealth in POE is not common sense. As an aside, saying something is common sense doesn't really say anything useful. It's impossible to find even one very obvious thing in life people agree on. Most people literally believe in some form of magic. How's that for common sense?

I've seen a ton of posts from people over the years who don't bother selling anything for a variety of reasons. I'm sure you've also seen many posts from people who say they're a poor player or that they need a cheap build because they're completely broke. I was demonstrating how easy it is to quickly amass a reasonable amount of wealth without doing anything complicated. No flipping, no scamming, almost no hassle.
Thanks Jennik, nice motivation. Started picking up stuff i thought looks quite good, now need to check out if i was right and learn how to judge what it could sell for.
Also learn not to sell the stuff i need myself (can't wear it all, though, so need to hoard less, too) :D

Completely right about common sense, lots of things you learned somehow or got used to randomly over the years feel like "common sense" but are just totally outlandish for other people/new players.

I could never motivate myself to sell bulk rares back when you had to make an entire topic for it, but with the new-ish public tabs (this is the first league I've played since they were implemented) it's A+ 10/10 people notice my items on poe.trade even when I don't put a price tag on them. Definitely worth it.

You are confusing what I do as a self found player with what I advised other people to do.

I think you are confusing the first part of HikaruYami's sentence with the entire sentence.

If you read it in context you will see it says "I could never motivate myself to sell bulk rares back when you had to make an entire topic for it". This means that trading rares for chaos orbs (like you suggest other people to do) was too much hassle back when you had to make a topic in the trade forum to do it.
HikaruYami goes on to say how it's much easier now we can use premium stash tabs.
Face it, all of your suggestions are worse than this idea:

I blame having just woken up when I responded. Somehow I read the bit you quoted and stopped reading the rest of his post. I checked and he didn't edit it, so that was definitely my fault. I assumed the "you" was referring to me and the bit at the end that I omitted was a nonsensical addition, like my making this thread had a negative impact on his motivation to sell things. It definitely makes sense in the context of the rest of the post, though.

Yeah, now you just need to use a 3rd party site and buy some premium tabs! What an improvement to QoL, could it get any better?
Good thread, I enjoyed reading and agree 100%. My gear is a mix of about 50/50 for self found vs purchased with money made mostly from selling.

Only thing I'd add is to try and Pay it Forward as they say if you're a seller. I had a few sellers that were really cool to me when I first started and gave me good deals and were all around good chaps. I had a guy ask to trade for an item the other day since he said he was new and broke and he offered me a mix of currency plus an item he thought totaled 5 chaos. I was tempted (gotta be honest) to take it all but then I told him that the currency he offered was enough, and more importantly the item he wanted to trade me was worth an exalt and to either keep it or sell it.

He seemed grateful and it kind of made my day. Most sellers I buy from are cool...but some...erm...no comment. I do my best to not be like that (although as we all know - the customer is NOT always right!) ;)
