For slow-medium speed weapons, nothing beats EQ, which is kinda funny for a skill with massive aoe. A huge balance problem in my opinion.
For fast weapons, arguments can be made for Molten/Static/Viper/Heavy depending on the scaling your build uses.
Don't even suggest for a moment EQ is anywhere near the power level of ranged skills lest you want this skill to get incinerated and melee is once again relegated to axe cyclone or reave. The latter is been unfairly neutered thanks to dagger nerfs.

The melee hit benefits. The projectiles do not. And they are about 50% or more of the skill's single target potential.
That is absolutely true, I had forgotten about the projectile part, which also apparently contains the AoE tag. MS gets my vote for the most confused skill ever.
Does this mean if I use conc effect, the overlapping ball explosions would do even more damage and the melee hit portion is for the most part useless?

Molten strike is in my experience the strongest single target damage. It's useful in any situation and works wonders with lgoh.
I used this setup: Molten Strike - Multi Strike - Greater Multiple Projectiles - Concentrated Effect - melee physical damage (in case of a physical damage weapon) - LGOH. From the passive skill tree you get yourself Point blank for extra more damage.
With a fast weapon it provides nice life regeneration and with some crit. chance your surgeons mod flasks refill quick too.
Just try it.

It seems that you're playing crit staff(endu charge on crit).
As I said before, EQ is probably the best, however molten strike is also pretty insane. It has a pretty high damage effectiveness, but it's the additional projectiles that take it over the top, even if they aren't supported by melee modifiers.
Edit: best links for molten strike single target dps are molten strike + wed + multistrike + added fire + melee phys + p2l/crit multi/crit strikes
Don't use gmp/lmp as it is a dps loss. You want to focus on your melee hit with the proj as secondary dps.
Why do you guys suggest Melee physical damage for motlen strike? It only increases the damage of the melee portion. I believe that for the 1st quote WED would be better and for the 2nd - GMP.
Melee physical because its the best for single target. GMP is actually a net dps loss.
For try, for see, and for know.
This is a buff

People seem to be forgetting the non-Vaal Melee Skill with the highest damage Multiplier,
Shield Charge

Reduced (and increased) AoE on the "pile of explosions" skills (Molten Strike, Firestorm, Blast Rain, Bladefall, Cluster Traps, Kinetic Blast) always change their spread in equal measure to their AoE.
This means that the amount of "overlap" that the pile skills have is a constant based on the skill itself. Notably, Blast Rain will always overlap at the target point, and Molten Strike inherently avoids overlaps (though enemies moving through the aoes may get hit multiple times since the aoes trigger at slightly different times).
Conc. Effect would thus provide a huge multiplier, shrink total aoe, and overlap explosions as commonly as it did before you put Conc. Effect on.
I mean, it's still a huge amount of damage, and if you want a single target skill anyway, it's a for-sure support to use.

I made no comparison to ranged skills. I'm saying this skill makes 90% of melee skills obsolete, both single target and aoe.

That alone will be enough for GGG to incinerate it.
Melee as a whole was in a good place, melee skills were simply missing a single crucial element to be actually competitive with non melee.
If you look at the perandus SC ladder, out of the top 40, perhaps 4 were melee.

This has been tested a lot with firestorm already. Reducing AoE will increase the chances that multiple areas will hit the same mob because the size of the mob stays constant.
