Gem level higher than character level on equiped items.

Hello,

I have not played in over a year and decided to play again. After logging in my character level is 47, but several of my items are unusable due to gems being level 48. I don't know how this could happen, but it looks like the gems have to be the wrong level. Obviously starting out with level 1 gems is going to make it a major pain to finish out the level. Please help. Thanks

Hey, it's possible that you already know this, and I'm not sure how much help it will be, but on the off chance that you don't know about it and are willing and able to use this to solve the issue... trading a skill gem plus an orb of scouring to a vendor will return that skill gem with one level removed, making it usable at your current character level.

You can buy Orbs of Scouring from Clarissa in Act 3 at a cost of 4 Orbs of Chance each, if that helps; You can also get a bulk deal from the master Catarina if you have level 6 reputation with her and want to buy thirty at once.

The reason this happened is they changed the experience curve needed for each gem level some time ago. In many cases they made it less experience to get to level 19 but more to get from 19 to 20. So your gems kept what experience they had but the gem level may have changed to match what level that amount of gem experience corresponded to.

Two other alternatives --aside from the "Good Samaritan" offer from Shovelcut-- would be:

1) Use alternate skill gems and grind away a little until you level

2) Obtain some lower level versions of those gems from vendors and use them until they are working for you.. or you level.. which ever comes first.

---2b) "If" you have another character, you can place those secondary copies of your critical skill gems in their "alt gear" (hit "x"), and level them until they reach a satisfactory level to put back on your character in question.

I have multiple copies of the gems I like most for use in multiple pieces of gear as well as for-use on other characters.
