Ok guys, let me explain to you that Perandus Coins ARE NOT Gold

So seeing all this panic concerning Perandus Coins, I feel like I'm one of the few people that understands that they have NOTHING in common with Gold found in other economies.

1. Oh mi god, is much currency, Orbs are obsolete!

The sole fact that you need a lot of these, doesn't mean they are gold. You can have as many as 500+ Alt orbs, and they are not gold.
What people do not understand, is that currency is only worth as much AS IT IS USEFUL.
What can you do with currency orbs? Well, what can you not? You can literally create (almost) any item, uniques included.
You can change links, recolor them, change their rarity tiers. The only thing you cannot do with them is their item ilevel and base.
And all of that is also RNG, so you need even more of them! There is almost never a situation that Orbs are not useful for anything, and they are always a scarce resource, you ALWAYS want to have more of.

What Perandus Coins are useful for? Well, for what we know now, you can SOMETIMES buy ONE random unique item from some dude (that spawns randomly).
Can you do anything apart from what they are created for? Nope.

My wild guess is that very few people will even want to buy these - most likely, you'll have too much of them, and too few useful uniques to buy. (inb4 Buy These Uniques from Perandus Dude... :S)

2. But they are trade-able! They are gold!?!?!?!?!!111oneoneonehundred

So? 1c uniques are also trade-able, but nobody is losing their mind about how destructive it is for economy. YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW USEFUL THEY WILL BE. STOP PANICKING
Why would buy some random coins on-masse, if all you can buy with them are 1c uniques and SUPER RARELY some useful unique?

3. But Gold?!?!

It seems to me that this whole panic is caused by the fact PoE never had Gold-based currency.
But it doesn't mean PoE doesn't have currency. There will always be some sort of value with items you have - be it possibility to exchange it for something else, or being able to use them.

PoE's currencies are ones of the most useful ones, because you can use them directly. In other games, Gold usually serves similar purpose, by having some sort of NPC's, which can craft items for you, for Gold.
BUT WE DON'T HAVE CRAFTING NPCs IN POE THAT WANTS GOLD!
If you could exchange these Coins, using some sort of NPC, for other currencies - I'd probably be worried.

This is a little bit messy, but I hope you get my point, and some of people stop losing hair on their heads. :V

What happens if a player comes across an instance with some flavour of the month unique for sale for lets say... 1500 coins.

The player has no coins, and no way to come across 1500 to buy the unique. A once in a lifetime chance.

Guess what happens next.

He'll get these coins almost for free, because other players didn't happen to find Fotm uniques, cuz balance?

Isn't that just Cartographer/Masters/Anything-else-that-is-rare all over again? :P

He sells Perandus for a decent amount of currency, and is closer to buying it than before he found him.

In PoE, everything is for trade. From items, to achievements, to just finding Perandus with a good offer and selling a party invite for someone else to use him. Everything is for trade.

Exactly. That's one of the possible outcomes.

The player sells the instance to another player who goes to an rmt site to purchase the 1500 coins in order to purchase the unique.

That's a big *IF* I think. If the rarity feature works anything like Masters' offering uniques for sale than these are the kinds of things that will usually be for sale:

Sadly, you can't do anything about losers who need to RMT. And you cannot base decisions around what they might do.

It states in the news release that high end uniques will be offered.

True enough, provided challenges are not gated by paying, and therefore having, vast amounts of coins.

Very false, if previous challenge league design repeats itself again here. It would basically be "hey guys, we made a standardize currency for all of those trade-gated challenges you hate, but you're going to do it anyway, because LOOK AT THIS SHINY MTX"

It'll probably be this gating chain: Trade for coins, coins for challenges, challenges for MTX. Therefore trade, because MTX.
