[New skill idea] Mantra of Might

Eh, I think cast-speed based attackers would be interesting. :(

How short of a duration would we have to go to make it melee usable but not caster usable?

Dunno, if we have any other spell ending the effect, duration wouldn't be an issue but it could be abused by totemists or summoners which don't have to be actively casting all the time. It's kinda hard to devise something for this kind of a skill that a caster wouldn't be able to exploit with his superior cast speed.

How about this? You have the defensive buff while casting and phasing during the secondary duration to help with positioning? I'd also make it self-only, can't see the coordination to pull this off in your average party. And, of course, in high level party play we can probably forget about any of this, as Sid was so kind to notice - ain't nobody got the time for that shit.

True, I'd personally like to see something similar, everybody probably knows I'm big on any kind of hybrid playstyle and it seems interesting enough, however, as it turns out we can do the exactly opposite thing currently. A fast attacker with RT and romira using frenzy linked with fortify, we got the defensive buff and we got offense stacking, followed by manual discharge. Unfortunately, nobody bothers with manual discharge anymore, unless they make it untriggerable and buff accordingly I can't really see it changing and they have no balls for any of that, if everyone'll pardon me being bluntly painful.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

I actually considered summoners. Auras have area quality, I feel it's the same deal here. If necessary, the base radius could be adjusted to make it less powerful for summoners but still good for, say, a melee Hierophant linking Mantra of Might to Spell Totem (they'd want Quality too). The Totem thing is probably bad, but I feel it should at least be an option.

I edited to OP to make it so using a skill other than MoM dispels the defensive buff. And it's a channel so you can't Trap or CoC it.

Also edited durations in OP. I'm assuming 1.2 seconds is enough time to go from channeling to attacking.

No phasing during secondary duration, it's intended to last for one attack only.

Bumpity. Kinda surprised at the overall negative reaction. Was trying to make something nice for melee for once, but I guess Fortify has everyone downright paranoid about casters stealing melee's thunder.

Actually, skills with Huge AoE wont help melee. They just turn melee into ranged without fixing melee itself (Reave, Ground Slam, etc).

it is because the game has reached the state when it is time to cut. cut ranged damage as you just cannot be more than immortal and kill faster than one screen per click. ranged meta has to be nerfed as a whole

close combat - slow but heavy hitting and survivable
ranged combat - quick maneuverable survivable but hits not as strong

this is what solves melee vs ranged issue in most games

in poe ranged is safe fast and hits the hardest. adding to melee (esp things that need fight-time) wont solve it

what might help A LOT would be 'leech applies only in melee range'. done.

Pretty much.

You might want to get a little realistic, though. We're not going to wave a magic wand and get multi-projectile chaining ranged skills out of the game. Way too late for that.

Melee, the way you see it, will never be viable in this game. The best we can possibly do is rangify it.

It's never too later to nerf OP things. No matter how many players abuse them.

Everyone abused CWDT+EC+IC in the past. GGG nerfed it.
Now everyone abuses 1-click screen clear. Why dont nerf it too?

Bump again, because I'd really like to see something like this in-game.
