Standard selling help

just take your item, remove any junk stats and search for items starting with slightly worse stats to find the approx. value of your own items.

You start the search with worse figures for each affix so that you can see other items that have one stat worse, one stat better for example.

It pays to filter with max buyout = 1 chaos then increase it if you get few/none results so that you don't get 99+ results all the time. if you still get 99+ results with 1c buyout, vendor it.
You just need to play a lot of builds and time to understand what has value. I am still learning and will always be learning due to meta changes and new items coming up.

Some basics are tier 1 and 2s affix rolls has value

You can learn here
http://poedb.tw/us/mod.php

A lot of people don't understand that like this shield I got for 1 chaos it's prolly worth 6-10ex in std.

You see it has tier 1 ES rolled, T2 all res, T2 Hybrid ES and stun recovery. All I added was a master mid tier ES% and we got a really good shield for Low Life, CI or even hybrid.

Unique are easy. Just cross reference with poe.trade but rares are the place I make all my money so you got to understand them.

And no worries I was like that guy who sold a shield like that for 1c too. You don't learn unless you make mistakes.

Trading
For most items, I devote a handful of stash tabs to trading for low buyouts.

For example,

I'll have a 1c, 3c, and 5c buyout tabs in my stash.
As I find gear, I'll start filling all the tabs more or less randomly. Once the tabs are full, every time I get an item that I feel is worth selling I will go look at my sell tabs. I'll replace an item that is less likely to sell and shuffle the removed item to a lower buyout tab. I keep on cascading my items downwards in price until they either sell or until something bumps them off the 1 chaos tab, at which point I just vendor it. This keeps your stock recycling new items through, reduces the price of non-selling items, and after a little while it tends to sort itself out. You will find that you have your better items selling for more and your worse items selling for less.

Pricing
For most items, don't get to hung up on pricing. Whether you sell something for 1 chaos or 3 chaos, its not the end of the world - you won't lose sleep over the missed opportunity of 2 chaos.

The only time I actually look up a price on an item is when I identify the rare and immediately say "whoa!" to myself. I have a specific stash that I keep these items in. When I have some downtime I will quickly just breeze through the tab and double check only those item prices on poe.trade.

Generally, my criteria for a "whoa" moment loosely follows this:
Weapons - over +140% increased physical damage or 90%+ spell damage
armor/helm - combination of 2 resists (30%+) and life
gloves - combination of 2 resists (30%+) and life, attack speed is nice too
boots - high movement speed (30%), life, and 2 resists (30%+)
Rings/amulets - combination of 2 resists (30%+) and life

Just keep trying it out and rotating your inventory. You will get a feeling for pricing as you do it more and more and be able to do it faster and with more items.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I have a good idea to start now. Girlfriend and I are both fine with just the chest but we want to try for the helmet before the end of the league and a lot of challenges look like they need to be paid if we have any hope. Going to be trying to sell some stuff in talisman and try to get the hang of it while getting the challenges and I'll take what I learn to standard (with more expectations on items to be worth holding on to for a few weeks before it sells of course).
